Background Information |
Governing Law: The list and dates of the official public holidays in Venezuela are regulated by the Ley de Fiestas Nacionales de 17 de junio de 1971 which replaced the earlier Ley de Fiestas Nacionales de 11 de junio de 1921.
Bank Holidays: Although it is common for Latin American countries to have one or two additional holidays when banks are closed but the rest of businesses, including government, is open, Venezuela stands out by the sheer number of bank holidays compared with the number of national public holidays.
Banks and financial establishments usually close the Monday after a non-national public holiday, such as All Saints' Day, but the Consejo Bancario Nacional reserves the right to make last minute changes which it will then announce in the national newspapers.
Opening hours: Banks are open from 8:30-11:30 and again from 14:00-16:30, while stores are open from 8:00-12:00 and 14:00-19:00 (with stores in shooping centers often remaining open until 20:00). Banks are closed Saturdays and Sundays.
Día de la Resistencia Indígena was decreed to replace Día de la Raza, by Presidential Decree Nº 2028 of October 10, 2002.
Dry Days Law: On public holidays, in Venezuela, shopping centres usually open at noon, and the sale of alcoholic beverage is strictly prohibited.
