21 Dec 2006  The Tongan Government will officially close down for its Christmas and New Year holiday on Friday December 22. The Government usually resumes on December 31 but because it falls on a Sunday followed by the January 1 public holiday, all Government operations will not resume until Tuesday January 2, 2007.  08 Dec 2006 (The Information Unit, Prime Minister's Office) The Privy Council has approved 2 new public holidays and cancelled 2 existing public holidays. From 2007, onwards, July 12th will be observed as the Birthday of the Heir to the Crown of Tonga, and August 1st will be the Official Birthday of the reigning Sovereign of Tonga. In 2008, August 1st will coincide with the Coronation Day of the reigning Sovereign of Tonga. The public holidays previously held on May 4th and July 4th of each year will no longer be public holidays.  30 Nov 2006 (Matangi Tonga) The coronation of Tonga's King Siaosi Tupou V has been postponed for 12 months, following the destruction of central Nuku'alofa by riot and fires on November 16.  14 Nov 2006 Following the death of the late king, Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, it has been said unofficially that July 4 will no longer be a public holiday in Tonga. The birthday of current King George Tupou V is May 4th, and it will probably be made into a public holiday. The new Crown Prince, Prince Tupouto'a Lavaka's birthday is on July 12, and it will also probably be made into a public holiday. However, the Lord Chamberlain Hon Fielakepa said today, that at present nothing had been confirmed.  01 Nov 2006 Tonga's government says November 4 is to be designated as Tonga National Day. Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Tonga are regulated by the Public Holidays Act [Cap 51] (Act No. 8 of 1919, 11 of 1970, 18 of 1988), as most-recently amended in 2006 and 2007.  Weekend Public Holidays: When public holidays fall on a Sunday, they are observed on the following Monday.
