06 Dec 2008 (Le Soleil-Dakar) Senegal's Minister of Labor has issued a communique announcing that the public sector would only get 1 day for the upcoming Eid al-Adha (or locally called Tabaski) public holiday, and that December 8 and 10, 2008, would be regular working days throughout Sénégal. • 30 Nov 2008 (Xalima-Dakar) The coordinator of Senegal's Moon Sighting Committee (Commission nationale d’observation du croissant lunaire), Iyane Thiam, has announced that the crescent Moon had not been sighted on Friday night and that, therefore, the Eid al-Adha public holiday (aka. Tabaski in Sénégal) would be observed on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, instead of the previously announced date of December 8. • 12 Mar 2008 (Walf Fadjri + African Global News) Thursday, March 13, 2008 has been declared a one-off public holiday (jour férié, chômé et payé) on the occasion of the 11th OCI conference (Organisation de la Conférence Islamique). • 30 Dec 2007 (BBC World) Serigne Saliou Mbacke, the the fifth caliph of the Mouride Muslim brotherhood, as well as the religious adviser to Senegalese President, Abdoulaye Wade, died on Friday, and a 3-day national mourning period was declared from Friday, December 28, to Sunday, December 30, inclusively. • 02 Apr 2007 (Sud Quotidien) President Abdoulaye Wade who was re-elected on February 25, declared the day of his inauguration, Tuesday April 3, 2007, a fully-paid public holiday in Senegal. Magal de Touba the Mouride celebration commemorating of the return from exile of Mouridism's founder Cheikh Amadou Bamba, is not, strictly speaking, an official public holiday, but all employees are allowed to take up to 3 days off, the day before and the day after the actual Magal, to be deducted from their other holiday time, although, usually, civil servants never make up those extra days. Therefore on that day, and the 2 following days, to be safe, one should assume that business and government contacts will not be reachable, as was the case, once again in 2007 . • For many West Africans, the "Magal de Touba" is as important as the Hajj, the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca. Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Sénégal were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules).
