Recent News and Updates

25 Oct 2006  The French cabinet has decided that the 2007 presidential elections will be held on April 22, 2007, followed by an almost certainly necessary second round on May 6, 2007. The presidential elections will be followed by a two-round vote for the legislative assembly, on June 10 and June 17, 2007. Note that French overseas dependencies, such as Saint Pierre et Miquelon, will cast their vote in the presidential election, the day before the vote in France.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the Saint Pierre et Miquelon public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Saint Pierre et Miquelon are the same as those in France and are regulated by Article L222-1 du Code du travail (Labour Code).  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).  Whit Monday was no longer recognized as one of the public holidays as of 2005, to help fund health care for elderly persons following the high number of elderly deaths during the heat wave of the summer of 2003. However, it returned to the list of French public holidays starting in 2008.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
