Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Portugal are regulated by the 1976 Decreto-ley núm. 874/76 relativo a las vacaciones, días feriados y ausencias (Diário da República, 1976-12-28), and in articles 208 to 232, 255 and 259 of the New Labour Code of 2003 (Código do Trabalho, Lei n.º 99/2003, de 27.08, com Declaração de Rectificação n.º 15/2003, de 28.10) which makes a distinction between feriados obrigatórios and feriados facultativos. The list of public holidays may not be altered by collective agreement or individual contract of employment (Article 21).  A distinction is made between the twelve mandatory and the two discretionary public holidays: the latter may each be replaced by any other day by agreement between employer and employees.  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).  Regional Holidays: Towns, cities, and regions may have additional public holidays .  In particular, Saint Anthony's Day is observed in Lisbon only.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: Bank of Portugal (Portugal central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
