Background Information |
The Northern Mariana Islands are also known as Saïpan (particularly in the USA), Saipan being the main island.
Austerity Holidays: Established by Public Law 15-24, the austerity holidays take place every other Friday. This cost-cutting measure began in September 2006 and will continue until the end of fiscal year 2007. When an austerity holiday falls on the same date as a public holiday (Good Friday 2007, for example), then the austerity holiday is moved to the day before, or the day after, if the public holiday falls on a Monday .
Columbus Day was renamed Commonwealth Cultural Day, beginning in 2006.
