Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in the Marshall Islands are regulated by Title 1, Ch. 9 of the Public Holidays Act 1988 (An Act to make provision for the declaration of Public Holiday in the Republic of the Marshall Islands).  Weekend Public Holidays: As per §902 of the 1988 Public Holidays Act, public holidays that fall on a Saturday are observed on the proceeding Friday and public holidays that fall on a Sunday are observed on the following Monday.  Memorial Day became a public hliday in 2004, in commemoration of March 1, 1954, when Bikini Atoll became ground zero,as the United States conducted its largest ever nuclear test, whose radioactive fallout spread quickly, drifting toward Rongelap, an inhabited island nearby. The name of this holiday was changed in 1999, then in 2003, then restored to its original name in 2005.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
