Memorial Day became a public hliday in 2004, in commemoration of March 1, 1954, when Bikini Atoll became ground zero,as the United States conducted its largest ever nuclear test, whose radioactive fallout spread quickly, drifting toward Rongelap, an inhabited island nearby. The name of this holiday was changed in 1999, then in 2003, then restored to its original name in 2005.
