Recent News and Updates

02 Sep 2008 (Time) Following last weekend's historical signing of an agreement whereby Italy would invest 5 billion dollars over the next 20 years to atone for its colonial occupation of Libya, it has been reported that Libya's ruler, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, will cancel the October 7 public holiday (put in place a few years ago when the aforementioned negotiations stalled) and replace it by an annual August 30th public holiday, tentatively named "Libyan-Italian Friendship Day".  26 Oct 2007 (Panapress + AfriqueEnLigne) In a communique issued yesterday, the Libyan General People's Committee gave additional on the modalities surrounding today's public holiday. Most notably, from dawn to 1800 hours local time, telephone communications between Libya and the outside world will be cut and citizens will be banned from traveling to Italy.  12 Sep 2007 (Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Science) Last night, the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Science (LCRSS), declared that the month of Ramadan would begin on Wednesday, September 12, 2007, a full day before almost all other Muslim countries.  29 Aug 2007 (Gulf News) Dr Waheeb Al Nasser, a physics professor at the University of Bahrain, issued a statement that he expected Libya to be the first to observe the beginning of Ramadan, on September 12, 2007. Note that the first day of the month Ramadan is not a public holiday in Libya, nor is it in many other Muslim countries.  30 Dec 2006 (The Associated Press) Libya declared three days of national mourning after the execution, today, of Iraqi ex-president Saddam Hussein. Flags were lowered to half-staff on public buildings and all festivities for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins this weekend, have been cancelled, the local news agency added.  20 Oct 2006 The Secretariat of the General People's Committee announced that the first, second, and third of Shawal would be an official holiday across Great Jamahiriya, i.e. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 23, 24, 25 of October.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the Libya public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Background Information

Weekend days are now Fridays and Saturdays .  Muslim Calendar: the dates used to calculate the occurrence of Muslim public holidays in Libya are determined by the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Science, or LCRSS. Over the last few years, Nigeria and Libya, have often declared the beginning of Hijra months earlier than all other Muslim countries. This is particularly true of the start of the month of Ramadan and of the Eid al Fitr public holiday, in some cases (eg. 2008) even declaring the month to begin before the New Moon had occurred.  Eid al Adha and Eid al Fitr are celebrated for at least 2 days each by most foreign embassies.  1911 Deportation Memorial Day: Beginning in 2007, the government has announced stringent restrictions on travel to Italy, on October 26 of every year. In addition, from dawn to 1800 hours local time, telephone communications between Libya and the outside world are to be be cut.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: Central Bank of Libya (Libya central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
