Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Lesotho are regulated by the Public Holidays Act (No. 7 of 1995) and which came into effect on January 1st, 1996 (Government Gazette, Extraordinary, 1995-10-13, Vol. XL, No. 73, p. 743), thus repealing the Public Holidays Act of 1967. It was later amended by Public Holidays (Amendment) Bill 2002 which shifted Heroes Day from 4 April to 25 May.  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example), but no official source has been found to confirm or repudiate this. Nevertheless, after reviewing data from previous years, it is strongly believed that they remain on fixed dates, especially since the Central Bank lists holidays that fall on Sundays and does not move them to the following Monday.  Africa Day/Heroes' Day: Heroes Day, used to be on April 4, but it was decided that, in Lesotho, Africa Day would be celebrated together with Heroes Day, on May 25, following the July 2001 African Unity (AU) summit, in Lusaka, Zambia.  King's Birthday: The 1995 Public Holidays Act lists this public holiday as occurring on May 2, but this is now observed on July 17, the birthday of King Letsie III (born July 17, 1963). May 2 was the birthday of his father, King Moshoeshoe II, who died in a car crash on January 15, 2006, barely 2 weeks after the Public Holidays Act was signed into law.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: Central Bank of Lesotho (Lesotho central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
