24 May 2008 (Koha Ditore-Pristina) Yesterday, after 3 days of intense negotiations, the Assembly of the Republic of Kosova finally adopted the Law on Official Holidays, incorporating with different names the three holidays requested by Albanian deputies; March 6, June 12, and November 28.  19 May 2008 (Novosti) The government cabinet of Kosovo has adopted a law setting forth the list of official public holidays in Kosovo. As expected, February 17, the date of Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence, was made into the new republic's National Day, while June 15, the day its new constitution is expected to be approved, will be Constitution Day.  18 Feb 2008 (World Bank) Yesterday afternoon, Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia. For the moment many details such as the future flag and list of public holidays of this republic are tentative.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the Kosovo public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Background Information

Governing Law: Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia on Sunday, February 17, 2008. Prior to that date, its list of public holidays came from the international organisations that had been based in Kosovo since 1999, and uses as reference the 2001 Essential labour law in Kosovo (UNMIK Regulation No. 2001/27).  Weekend Public Holidays: As an official part of Serbia, public holidays that fell on a Sunday used to be moved to the next Monday, but the list of public holidays for the new republic will follow the Albanian list, which has both Saturdays and Sundays moved to the following Monday. For the moment, we have used the convention that only Sunday public holidays are moved to the following Monday. We will revise this, as we receive more information from our local contacts.  Ethnic and linguistic holidays: are included in the category of memorial holidays, to be regulated by the Republican Council For Memorial Holidays: • Albanians: March 6, June 12, November 28. • Romas:April 8. • Turks: April 23. • Ashkalijs: February 15. • Gorans:September 28. • Serbs: January 27.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).

Footnotes
*

Observance : Any entry in the Observance column indicates that, in Kosovo, the holiday may be regional or non-official or limited to certain religious and/or linguistic groups, or begin at a time other than midnight. Note that religious holidays are included only if they are national public holidays, or if the national labour code has specific holiday allowances for employees of specific religions. For more information, see our pages on the religious calendars of the world.

**

Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Kosovo that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). To find out more about these uncertainties, see the footnote below, if any, for each specific religion.

(2)

Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Kosovo were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules). For more details on Muslim holidays, see Muslim Calendar Holidays. For Salat (prayer times) calculations, see our Freeware page.
