Background Information |
Governing Law: Official public holidays in the Republic of Kiribati are regulated by Section 6 of the Public Holidays Ordinance (Cap 81). These were originally collated in the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 1992 (No. 11 of 1992), later amended by the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2001 (No. 4 of 2001), the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2002 (No. 4 of 2002), and most recently by the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2005 (No. 14 of 2005).
Last-Minute Changes: Under section 9 of the 2005 Public Holidays Amendment, the Minister, acting in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet, has the power to amend the Schedule simply by publishing a notice to that effect in the Gazette. The Minister will retain the power under section 6 to vary the days fixed as public holidays on an ad hoc basis.

Note that religious holidays are included only if they are national public holidays, or if the national labour code has specific holiday allowances for employees of specific religions. For more information, see our pages on the religious calendars of the world. |
