Background Information |
Governing Law: The official public holidays of Kazakhstan are regulated by the Law on Public Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Labour Law 1999 (which took effect on January 1st, 2000). It was later amended by the 2005 law on national holidays, which made both Kurban Ait and Christian Orthodox Christmas, non-working days along with the New Year celebrations.
Mid-Week Public Holidays: Section 56-4 of Kazakhstan's Labour Code entitles the government to move any public holiday that falls in the middle of the week to another weekday, such as a Monday or Friday, to minimize the disruption caused by holidays to business life.
Classification: Public holidays are grouped into 3 categories: National Holidays, State Public Holidays, and Religious Public Holidays. When any of the holidays of the first 2 caegories fall on a weekend, a day in lieu is given on the next working day.

Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Kazakhstan that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). To find out more about these uncertainties, see the footnote below, if any, for each specific religion. |
