21 Aug 2008 (Reuters) Earlier tonight, Bruce Golding, the Prime Minister of Jamaica, told Reuters he hoped to declare a national public holiday after the current Olympic Games to celebrate the island's success (as of tonight, Jamaica has collected seven athletics medals, including golds in three sprints).
27 May 2008 (Jamaica Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports) The Chairman of the Jamaica National Bicentenary Committee, Professor Verene Shepherd, has called for an expansion of the national heritage calendar to embrace all the critical moments in the country's history that have helped to shape the nation. Such dates might include the commemoration of the last ship with African slaves to arrive at the Kingston on February 17; the passage of the Trans-Atlantic Trade in Africans (TTA) Abolition Act on March 25; the anniversary of the outbreak Tacky's war on April 8; the trial of Sam Sharpe on April 19; the Frome massacre day on May 2.
15 Nov 2007 (Radio Jamaica) Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced that local government elections would occur on Wednesday December 5th. Although election days are not general public holidays in Jamaica, banks often close for the day.
31 Aug 2007 (Jamaica Gleaner News) The Jamaica Bankers' Association (JBA) has advised that all 10 commercial and merchant banks will close at noon on Monday, September 3, 2007, on the day of the upcoming national election.

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Jamaica are regulated by the The Holidays (Public General) Act of 1895 (Laws of Jamaica, Vol. VII), most recently amended in 1973.
Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that fall on a Sunday are moved to the following Monday. (The same is not always true for public holidays that fall on a Saturday).
