Recent News and Updates

25 Jul 2007 (The Telegraph) Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced that he is set to make July 24 a national day for celebrating volunteering - and possibly make it a new bank holiday.  18 Jul 2007 (Ireland.com) The Vatican has announced that Saint Patrick's Day would be observed on March 15, 2008, instead of the traditional date of March 17, since Saint Patrick's, will coincide with the second day of the Holy Week and under the Catholic Church's rules, the saint's feast day does not rank as high as the Monday before Easter.  30 Jan 2007 (BBC News) Many workers in Northern Ireland could get an extra 10 days paid holiday within two years under new government plans. At the moment, some bosses include bank holidays as part of their staff's 20-day annual leave entitlement, but under Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain's plan, employers will no longer be able to force staff to take these as part of their statutory leave. These plans would give workers in Northern Ireland two days more holiday than those in Great Britain.  01 Dec 2006 Next parliamentary elections, for Northern Ireland - March 7, 2007.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the Northern Ireland public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.
