Recent News and Updates |
22 Jul 2008 (Magyar Nemzet) The Labour and Social Affairs Ministry of Hungary (Szociális és Munkaügyi Miniszter, aka. SZMM), in accordance with law 170/2006 (Chapter VII, section 28), has released the official list of bridge, and other one-off, public holidays for the year 2009, along with the list of Saturdays that will be regular working days, in compensation.
25 Mar 2007 (Hungarian Labour Ministry) The most recently updated list of 2007 Bridge Public Holidays, and corresponding "working Saturdays" has been uploaded to the Q++ Studio 2007 Hungary public holidays web page. These Bridge Public Holidays are compensated by corresponding working Saturdays on: 10-mar-2007, 21-apr-2007, 20-oct-2007, 22-dec-2007, 29-dec-2007.
01 Dec 2006 The cabinet, on Wednesday, approved a decree to make the day of Puskás' funeral, December 9, 2006, a day of national mourning. Accordingly the flag of the Hungarian Republic will be hoisted, then lowered to half mast at a military ceremony outside Parliament.
22 Nov 2006 The government said that the day of Ferenc Puskás’s funeral, December 9, 2006, would be a day of mourning, and that schools would be expected to remember him in lessons. MPs held a minute’s silence in his honour in Parliament on November 17. Ferenc Puskás, the nation’s greatest-ever football player and key man in the legendary Golden Team of the 1950s, died after a long illness at the age of 79. Known by various nicknames, including the affectionate Little Brother and the Galloping Major, Puskás was voted the 20th century’s fourth best player by the International Federation for Football History and Statistics for his outstanding displays for Hungary and Real Madrid.

Background Information |
Governing Law: Official public holidays in Hungary are regulated by the Act VIII of 1991 on the State Festival of the Republic of Hungary (Magyar Közlöny, 1991-03-14, No 29, pp. 651-652) which sets forth the list of public holidays, from which the dates of March 15, August 20 and October 23 are singled-out as National Holidays, August 20 being made the official national day of Hungary. The law further cancels the public holidays of April 4 and November 7, due to their association with Soviet occupation.
Revolution Day: March 15, marking the outbreak of the 1848/9 revolution and war of independence, from which modern parliamentarianism in Hungary can be dated.
St. Stephen's Day: August 20, the feast of St Stephen of Hungary, founder of the state, declared by Parliament, in 1991, to be the official State National Day.
Republic Day: October 23, anniversary of the outbreak of the 1956 revolution and proclamation of the Republic of Hungary in 1989.
Bridge Public Holidays were introduced in 2007 as per law law 170/2006 (Chapter VII, section 28), to occur on Mondays preceding Tuesday holidays, and to occur on Fridays following Thursday holidays. In order to make up for these extra public holidays, specific Saturdays have been designated as Working Saturdays. The law also makes special provisions for the case of December 24.
