Recent News and Updates |
21 Jul 2007 (Le Figaro) The islands of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint Martin, previously communes of Guadeloupe, have now been granted the TOM (Territoire d'Outre-Mer) status meaning that they can pass territorial laws, control their fiscal policy, choose to stay in, or leave the European Union, and declare their own public holidays.
25 Oct 2006 The French cabinet has decided that the 2007 presidential elections will be held on April 22, 2007, followed by an almost certainly necessary second round on May 6, 2007. The presidential elections will be followed by a two-round vote for the legislative assembly, on June 10 and June 17, 2007. Note that French overseas dependencies, such as Guadeloupe, will cast their vote in the presidential election, the day before the vote in France.

Background Information |
Governing Law: Official public holidays in Guadeloupe are the same as those in France and are regulated by Article L222-1 du Code du travail (Labour Code), to which is added Abolition Day.
Carnival is not an official public holiday, but both Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday are treated as a customary (common law) days off. The same is true of Ash Wednesday and mid-Lent.
The islands of Saint Barthélemy (St.Barths) and Saint Martin voted to secede from Guadeloupe and in 2007, the islands became French overseas collectives.
Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).
Schoelcher Day on July 21st and All Souls' Day on November 2nd are also observed by many.
Whit Monday was no longer recognized as one of the public holidays as of 2005, to help fund health care for elderly persons following the high number of elderly deaths during the heat wave of the summer of 2003. However, it returned to the list of French public holidays starting in 2008.
