Recent News and Updates

24 Dec 2007 (Tahiti Presse) The Council of Ministers of French Polynesia, has announced additional, end-of-the-year, public holidays for civil servants and government services. These are: the afternoon of Monday, December, 24, 2007, plus Monday, December 31, 2007, and Wednesday, January 2, 2008.  23 Dec 2006 The election of the President of French Polynesia was delayed until next Tuesday, December 26, due to a lack of quorum in the Assembly (who elects the President). The election on Tuesday will be a one-turn, relative majority vote.  20 Dec 2006 An election for the position of the President of French Polynesia will be held on 21 December, within the legally set limit of 2 weeks after a motion of no confidence in the Temaru Government succeded.  25 Oct 2006 The French cabinet has decided that the 2007 presidential elections will be held on April 22, 2007, followed by an almost certainly necessary second round on May 6, 2007. The presidential elections will be followed by a two-round vote for the legislative assembly, on June 10 and June 17, 2007. Note that French overseas dependencies, such as French Polynesia, will cast their vote in the presidential election, the day before the vote in France.  30 Dec 2005 (Tahitipresse) The government's official report on last Wednesday's Council of Ministers meeting states tersely that the Council of Ministers voted Wednesday to make January 2 a paid annual public holiday for territorial government employees throughout French Polynesia.  05 Oct 2005 (Tahitipresse) Two independent political parties, the Fetia Api and the No Oe e te Nunaa, went on record as being prepared not to vote in support of a Temaru government project to replace the June 29 Autonomy Day public holiday with a new annual public holiday on November 20, to be called National Day of Tahiti.  11 Nov 2004 (Radio Australia-Melbourne) The Tahitipresse online news site reports that the pro-Independence leader of French Polynesia, Oscar Temaru, who claims he is still president, told Tahiti television last night he was declaring Friday, November 12, 2004, a one-off public holiday, thereby giving the people of French Polynesia a four-day long weekend.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the French Polynesia public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in French Polynesia are essentially the same as those in France, to which are added Gospel Day and Autonomy Day.  Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).  Whit Monday French Polynesia kept Whit Monday in its list of public holidays from 2005 to 2007, at a time when it was no longer an official public holiday in France.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: Bank of France (French Polynesia central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
