Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in the Dominican Republic are governed by the nuevo Código de Trabajo (Ley No. 16-92) in its updated version of 1999, and by the Ley núm. 108 que señala los días festivos y por tanto no laborables en las oficinas públicas y particulares which replaced the law 3933, of September 20, 1954.  Mid-Week Public Holidays: The moving of some of the fixed-date public holidays, to the nearest Monday, is set out in the law 139-97 of June 19, 1997, which states that public holidays that are neither patriotic, nor religious, in character, shall be moved to the closest Monday if they occur on a weekday. However, these changes are subject to official confirmation near the end of every year, for the following year.  Eves: Although they aren't official public holidays, most people take off the afternoons of Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (Dominican Republic central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
