Recent News and Updates |
21 Sep 2007 (actualne.cz) The Czech Senate passed a draft law abolishing some of the traditional public holidays which senators considered either historically obsolete or outright alien. International Women's Day would be cancelled as would Family Day and the Day of Knowledge.
07 Feb 2007 (Radio Praha) Further to our news story of November 6, 2006, yesterday, the senatorial amendment to add Good Friday to the list of Czech public holidays was not voted upon, and provoked heated debatres in the lower house, yesterday, as opponents of the proposal tried to torpedo it, by adding an amendment which would cancel Women's Day as a public holiday.
03 Nov 2006 The Senate today again submitted a bill declaring Good Friday national holiday to the Chamber of Deputies and at at the same time proposed that International Women's Day be deleted from the list of Czech special days. The bill was approved by 41 out of 62 senators present, but may not make it through the Chamber of Deputies where the left and right forces are balanced, as the left supports the International Women's Day being listed among special days, while the right argues that unlike other special days, International Women's Day is not directly connected with the Czech Republic.
