Recent News and Updates

08 Oct 2007 (La Patria) This week, the full week preceding the Columbus Day public holiday, students in Colombia will be off all week, as they have been for a few years, now, the week before Easter. Though this is not a public holiday for the work force, many parents are expected to take this week off to travel to tourist resorts and to see family.  26 Apr 2007 (Presidencia de la República) The week preceding the Día de la Raza national public holiday, will be an additional week off for teaching staff and students in Colombia, from kindergarten through high school.  14 Feb 2007 (Office of the Press Secretary, the White House) US President, George W. Bush, and First Lady, Mrs. Bush, will travel to Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala, and Mexico (in that order) from March 8-14, 2007. One can expect major disturbances in these countries' capitals due to heightened security and anti-American demonstrations.  19 Dec 2006 The Colombian Stock Market (BVC: Bolsa De Valores de Colombia) will be closed on Friday December 29, 2006.  04 Nov 2006 Banks and other financial institutions will be closed on Monday November 6, as a replacement for November 1st All Saints' Day which fell on a weekday.  02 Oct 2005 (Radio Caracol) Raimundo Emiliani Román, the originator of the Ley Emiliani, the rule used in Colombia, and many other Latin American countries, to move public holidays that fall in the middle of the week, died in Bogotá, at the age of 91.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the Colombia public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Background Information

Governing Law: The official public holidays of Colombia are regulated by various individual laws, such as the recent Ley 20.215 de 2007, concerning Labour Day.  Emiliani’s Law determines that most (but not all) public holidays in Colombia move to the next Monday whenever the official date occurs on a day other than a Monday, so as not to break the work weeks in half .  Easter week and the full week before Columbus Day: These 2 weeks are now school holidays for all students in Colombia, and therefore many parents take paid, or un-paid, vacation days during these 2 weeks, meaning that although these 2 weeks are not full public holidays, one should expect many people to be off, and business in general to be difficult to conduct.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: Bank of the Republic (Colombia central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
