Background Information

Governing Law: Public holidays in Guernsey are all regulated by The Public Holidays Ordinance, 1994 as amended in the The Public Holidays Ordinance, 2001, p. 527 and The Public Holidays (Alderney) Ordinance, 2004, except for Good Friday and Christmas which are customary law holidays. Their naming is set forth in The Bills of Exchange (Amendment) Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 1993 which provides that all references to Bank Holidays in any enactment, order of the court or statutory instrument shall be replaced with the term Public Holidays.  The Summer Bank Holiday is a major full-blown public holiday despite the fact that it is observed on different dates depending on the islands (Guernsey, Alderney, Herm, Jethou) and is therefore classified as a "regional" public holiday.  Alderney obeserves slightly different public holidays than the rest of the Channel Islands (namely Guernsey). In particular, since 2005, the "Public Holiday (Homecoming Day) (Alderney) Ordnance, 2005" has made December 15 a yearly public holiday in Alderney .  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: Bank of England (Guernsey and Alderney central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
