Background Information |
Governing Law: The list and dates of official public holidays in the British Virgin Islands are regulated by the Public Holidays Act, Chapter 199, as amended by The Public Holidays Amendment Act (2000).
Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend are usually moved to the following Monday.
Territory Day: This holiday originated in 1956 when the Federation of the Leeward Islands, created in 1872, was dissolved. The holiday began to be called "Territory Day", although it was not until 1978 that this name was substituted for "Colony Day" in the Schedule to the Public Holidays Act. In 2001, the BVI Public Holidays Review Committee did propose renaming theis public holiday as "Virgin Islands Day", but as of June 2008, this change was not implemented.
