Background Information |
Governing Law: Official public holidays in Botswana are regulated by the Labour Laws of Botswana (Part VIII / 100) and the Public Holidays Act, 2006- Act No. 17 of 2006 (An Act to re-enact, with amendments the Public Holidays Act), published in the Government Gazette Vol. XLIV, No. 69, dated September 15th, 2006).
Multi-Day Holidays: Before 2006, the public holidays of President's Day and Botswana Day both lasted 2 days. Then the previously mentioned 2006 Public Holidays Amendment reduced both public holidays to one day, in compensation for which, Ascension was added as a public holiday, and an additional day in lieu was given when Botswana Day falls on a Saturday. However, in practice, it would seem that the new public holidays were gratefully accepted but everyone still takes 2-day holidays for President's Day and Botswana Day, including the Government of Botswana and the Bank of Botswana.
Sale and Consumption of Alcohol: A 2007 law forbids bars and bottle stores from opening on Sundays and public holidays.
