22 Aug 2008 (The Antigua Sun) Prime Minister, Baldwin Spencer, announced that cabinet had approved a recommendation making Monday, September 1, 2008, a one-off, half day national public holiday to be observed as a day of prayer and fasting by the entire nation.
12 Mar 2008 (The Antigua Sun) Tuesday, March 18, 2008, will be a public holiday in Antigua and Barbuda on the occasion of the funeral of former Prime Minister, Sir George Herbert Walter.
13 Feb 2008 (The Antigua Sun) Minister of Labour, Dr. Jacqui Quinn- Leandro, announced that next Tuesday, February 19, 2008, would be a one-off-public holiday, to coincide with the funeral of late Minister of Agriculture and former MP for All Saints East and St. Luke, Charlesworth Theophilus Samuel.

15 Jul 2006 In the second half of 2005, the Antigua and Barbuda parliament approved an amendment to the Public Holidays Act, changing the name change of the V. C. Bird Day to National Heroes Day on December 9.
10 Dec 2003 (Caribbean Media Corporation-Bridgetown) Antigua and Barbuda's prime minister, Lester Bird, has announced plans to have 9 December, the birthday of the island's first National Hero and prime minister, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, to be made a public holiday.

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Antigua and Barbuda are regulated by the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2005 (An Act to amend the Public Holidays Act Cap. 345), published in the Official Gazette Vol. XXV No. 57 dated 15th September, 2005, which repealed and replaced the Public Holidays Act of 1954 [CAP. 354].
Weekend Public Holidays: There are very specific individual rules for public holidays that fall on the weekend in Antigua and Barbuda.
VC Bird Day (Vere Cornwall Bird Snr Day): This public holiday is still incorrectly listed on July 1st in many websites, but it was combined into National Heroes Day in 2006.
Common Law Holidays: Sundays, Christmas Day and Good Friday are observed as Common Law Holidays.
