South Korean cultural claims with VANK

VANK insisted that the origin of the print was korea, and sent spam mails to publishers of textbook and encyclopedias of all over the world (this article). It is known that it is Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg of Germany to invent the print method. But, they insist it's invention is Jikji of Korea. The insistence that the print method was invented in Korea is different from the fact. About the woodcut in an age that was older than the invention of Germany. However, the invention of the woodcut is China.


Korean mass media and VANK insist sushi, kendo, eng shui, and Chinese character also invented in Korea. This insistence of lie has received repulsion from Internet user in Japan, China, and Taiwan. Soccer also seems to have been made in South Korea in their insistences.

VANK or Voluntary Agency Network of Korea is one of the organizations to introduce Korea as it is, operating based in Republic of Korea. It states that its purpose is to "enhance the image of Korea on the road." VANK links Korean teenagers with teenagers around the world to benefit both by cultural and historical enrichment through penpals and chatting.^{[citation needed]} VANK also actively attempts to correct the historical interpretations from a Korean perspective on the Internet. VANK is famous for sending massive amounts of e-mails to webmasters who are in charge of websites that contain, in their opinion, distorted information about Korea.[1] Due to this behavior, to some websites masters it is known as one of the cyber terrorism groups in Korea, which is levering the target's computers and information technology, particularly via the Internet, to cause physical, real-world harm or severe disruption with the aim of advancing the attacker's goal. Webmasters have [2] complained about the enormous amounts of e-mails they receive from VANK and as a result have been forced to change the contents of their websites in order to stop it.

On August 18, 2005, Google Earth's name for Sea of Japan was changed to the name East Sea being displayed first with Sea of Japan in parenthesis, where formerly the opposite had been the case. This resulted in Japanese 2channel users protesting the web server of VANK by posting large volumes of messages containing insults about Korea and VANK's efforts. [3]

However, the change was originally proposed by someone in Google Group Korea, and whether the user was related to VANK is unknown. [4] As of 2005, Google Earth displays both Sea of Japan and East Sea as equal names. In 2006, VANK has actively involved to criticize China's undue attempts to put Korea's old kingdoms of Goguryeo, and Balhae, which were founded and prospered in northern part of Korea and Manchuria into parts of China's history.

Of particular concern is the pro-vank policy espoused by the Korea Times newspaper in Seoul which runs chirpy accounts every 3 weeks of the latest VANK internet vandalism. VANK's agenda is similar to the current Korean Governments policy on many issues and this has led to many in the expert community suspecting that VANK's activities are funded by Korea's current Government. While many experts in Korea sympathise with the Koreans for the brutal occupation by Japan, there is no sympathy with the time wasted by vankers . The group operate by encouraging young people of Korea to take efforts in correcting the distorted information about Korea around the world, sometimes even creating a violent mob mentality.

VANK, the Korean cyber-terrorist

VANK (Voluntary Agency Network of Korea) is the Korean cyber-terrorist organization supported by Korean Government.

The following mail is the VANK's template description about Sea of Japan. They send spam mail which contains the same description.

Dear Sir or Madam
Recently I visited your organization's website and was quite surprised to find your maps of Korea and Japan still describe Korea's East Sea as Sea of Japan which is incorrect.

Such an error in a well known website as yours comes as a surprise since we regard you as one of the world's best.

For your reference, the world's largest commercial mapmaker, National Geographic, and the travel guidebook, Lonely Planet Publication promised us that they would now use the name East Sea.

In addition, lycos.com is already using the name, 'East Sea' in their website after we pointed out the error.

Using a proper name for the body of water between the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago is not simply a question of changing the name of a geographical feature.

It is rather a part of national effort by the Korean people to erase the legacy of their colonial past and to redress the unfairness that has resulted from it.

So, I urge you to use East Sea to describe the body of water in question or both Korean and Japanese designation simultaneously (e.g. 'East Sea/Sea of Japan') in all your documents and atlases.

Once Korea and Japan agree on a common designation, which is in accord with the general rule of international cartography, we can then follow the agreed-on designation.
