J-Pop princess KOs Kano in steamy snapshot sales

J-Pop’s comeback queen Tomomi Kahala is on the hit charts again, this time through a surprisingly successful follow-up to a best-selling collection of nude photos, according to Shukan Taishu (4/24).

Kahala’s volume, “Crystallize II,” has earned the reputation of being a cracker — in more ways than one, considering the photos of her dumpy derriere — and skyrocketing sales have surpassed all projections despite tough competition from nude collections by other big names, notably Mika Kano.

“(Kahala’s collection) went on sale at around the same time Mika Kano brought out her nude shots, and, at 7,000 yen a pop, was pretty pricey. I didn’t think it had a hope of selling,” a reporter for an afternoon tabloid tells Shukan Taishu. “But then, totally opposite to my expectations, sales have been really good.”

Some bookstores have already sold out of Kahala’s book even though it has only been on sale a few weeks. Those who’ve seen the inside speak highly of it.

“There’s a cut with her lying on her side on some wooden flooring. Even though her long hair is hiding her nipples, her ample breasts bulge sideways and her cute little butt sticks out, providing a beautiful, rippling, contoured bodyline that you could spend hours gazing at,” the hack says. “In another cut taken from above as she lies down on an embankment in this pair of skimpy, black, see-through shorts, she oozes the essence of a mature woman’s flesh in a manner that’s imply intriguing.”

A DVD that comes together with the collection has also been praised for its raw eroticism.

“Judging by the look on her face, I can imagine nothing else but Kahala screaming out for satisfaction in a scene where she’s crawling around on all fours in her pink lingerie while the camera films her from behind,” a reporter on the entertainment beat tells Shukan Taishu. “Then you’ve got the horse-riding photos. Kahala was a good enough rider to make the national championships as a schoolgirl and she sits atop her mount as though she was born for it. It’s almost as though she’s mounting something else.”

But perhaps the most stunning aspect of Kahala’s racy pictorial, and perhaps the reason why it’s got so much bounce, is its accompaniment by the throw-in gift of a couple of rubbers.

“The pictorial is sold together with two strawberry-scented condoms,” the afternoon tabloid hack tells Shukan Taishu. “It’s almost as though she’s saying, ‘Use these with me.’ It drives me crazy.” (By Ryann Connell)

Producer of Morning Musume to marry

Tsunku, a member of the popular Sharan Q group and the producer of the famous Morning Musume female troupe, will get married in June, he said on his homepage.

The 37-year-old Tsunku will marry a 25-year-old woman he began dating last August. Tsunku proposed to her in January.

“She is a splendid girl who can ease my stress. I want to start a new life full of originality,” Tsunku said in a movie available on his home page.

Well I guess the rumours that Tsunku is gay are now over.

Japan’s ultimate ‘chick magnet’ car flys the coop

First released onto the market in 1970, the Celica’s stylish design and affordable price soon saw it labeled as Japan’s preferred “date car.”

But the Celica wasn’t all about looks, either, with the car forming the basis of Toyota’s successful World Rally Championship teams, including the three driver’s championship titles the automaker collected in the ’90s.

“The Celica sold itself on being a stylish car, but young people nowadays won’t buy a car just because it looks cool,” a car magazine’s chief editor tells Sunday Mainichi. “As you can tell from the large numbers of SUVs and mini-vans on the roads, times are different now and tastes have changed.”

Toyota last changed the Celica’s design in 1999, which was the seventh version of popular sporty sedan. Toyota sold 850,000 Celicas in Japan alone and, up until this spring, another 4.17 million in the rest of the world. But Celica sales in Japan last year dropped to just 1,600 vehicles and the one-time mainstay of the country’s biggest automaker was dropped from the production line, a fate that had already befallen the Celica in North America last year.

What has attracted attention about Toyota’s decision to dump the Celica was that archrival Nissan has scored a hit by reviving the Fairlady Z and Skyline, both contemporaries of the Celica. Some suggest that Toyota could have done the same for its once reliable seller.

“Nissan really did well by promoting its vehicles as sports cars that even mature drivers could enjoy getting behind the wheel in,” the car rag editor tells Sunday Mainichi. “Next year, huge numbers of Baby Boomers will retire. These are the people who enjoyed driving the Celica in their younger days. It’d be interesting to see how well a ‘New Celica’ targeting retiring Baby Boomers would go in the market.”

Having just taken the painful decision to stop making the once sleek and sexy Celica, it hardly seems likely to be in line for a comeback. At least, not yet.

“It’s hard to say what’s going to happen from now,” a Toyota spokesman tells Sunday Mainichi. “And that includes discussion over whether to revive the name.” (By Ryann Connell)
