Step 2: Linux Installation
You are now ready to install Linux on your system. Note that you can still play games on your system once you have installed Linux, but this will require a special boot command (see 'Resources' section)Step 2a - Formatting your PS3:
- Plug in USB keyboard (Optional) or Game Controller
- Power on
- Navigate (using the game controller) to:
"System Settings/Format Utility/Format HD/Custom/" - Select "10gb for PS3"
Step 2b - Installing Other OS
- Reboot your System
- Insert USB drive with the boot image
- Navigate to "System Settings/Install Other OS"
- Note that if the USB stick is connected that it will load.
- Under "/System Settings/Install other OS/Default Systems/" set the Default System as 'Other OS'
- "Do you want to Quit? "Yes"
- Reboot your System. If you have your USB keyboard you can plug in now.
- Insert Fedora DVD
- You will see a Linux boot prompt.
At this kboot prompt, enter: "linux64 text xdriver=fbdev", hit enter. (What you are doing is setting the install image to 64bit, instead of the default 32bit behavior.) - You are first prompted to do a media test. (Optional)
- You should now see the actual installation procedure starting up.
- When prompted, say yes on the partitioning question if you are installing for the first time.
- Remove Linux partitions on selected drives and create default layout.
- "Yes" on this final partitioning question. The PS3 doesnt come with much for memory.
- You will want to both activate on boot, and support IPV4 by default.
- If you know what your doing here set a manual IP, and or otherwise set DHCP.
- If you know how to/need to set a DNS based Host name here do so, otherwise use DHCP.
- Set your timezone. Hopefully you know this one, we dont. :)
- Set your root password, and dont lose this.
- A final note about logging, and a prompt to start the package installation. Note: This will take some time.
- Fedora 8 ppc64 should now be on your PS3!
- As Fedora comes up, hopefully you see 8 penguins. This indicates that the OS is using all of your system cores. This very useful later.
- You may be prompted with a final setup agent that allows you to further customize your setttings. You can exit.
- You can now login to your Fedora system.
