Background Information |
Governing Law: Official public holidays in Iceland are regulated by the Act No. 88 of 1971 on a forty hour working week (Lagasafn, 1991, Ministry of Justice, Reykjavik, Iceland, Vol. I, pp. 618-619) which lists the full-day and half-day public holidays of Iceland. This act was amended in 1982, by the Act No. 94 of 1982 to amend Act No. 88 of 1971 on forty-hour working week (Lagasafn, 1991, Ministry of Justice, Reykjavik, Iceland, Vol. I, p. 618) which added a new annual public holiday in August.
Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example).
However, The Central Bank of Iceland did close on the first Monday in January in 2005 and 2006, when New Year's Day did fall on a weekend. Other banks were open .
Marine Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in June during the Festival of the Sea.
Sovereignty Day (December 1): marks the 1918 Act of Union when Denmark recognised Iceland as a fully sovereign state, but it is not a public holiday.

Observance : Any entry in the Observance column indicates that, in Iceland, the holiday may be regional or non-official or limited to certain religious and/or linguistic groups, or begin at a time other than midnight. Note that religious holidays are included only if they are national public holidays, or if the national labour code has specific holiday allowances for employees of specific religions. For more information, see our pages on the religious calendars of the world. |
