Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Italy are regulated by the Law 260 of May 27, 1949, Relative to Public Holidays (Gazzetta Ufficiale, 1949-05-31, no 124, pp.1415) as amended by the Law 90 of March 31 1954 (Gazzetta Ufficiale, 1954-04-22, no 92, p. 1186) and the Law 54 of March 5, 1977 (Gazzetta Ufficiale, 1977-03-07, no 63).  Regional Public Holidays: Offices and shops are also closed in the following cities on local feast days honoring their patron Saints. They may also close earlier on the eve of a holiday.  Saint Mark: April 25, Venice. Saint John the Baptist: June 24, Florence, Genoa, Turin. Saints Peter and Paul: June 29, Rome. Saint Rosalia: July 15, Palermo. Saint Gennaro: September 19, Naples. Saint Petronio: October 4, Bologna. Saint Saturnio: October 30, Cagliari. Saint Giusto: November 3, Trieste. Saint Nicola: December 6, Bari.
