myself

my·self [ mī sélf ]

pron
Definition:

1. refers back to speaker: refers to the speaker or writer ( first person reflexive pronoun, used when the object of a verb or preposition refers to the same person as the subject of the verb )
I didn't enjoy myself very much.
Of all the people I am critical of, I am most critical of myself.

2. refers emphatically to speaker: refers emphatically to the speaker or writer
I'm curious about that myself.
I can't expect you to be able to read my writing; I myself can't read it.

3. my normal self: my normal or usual self
I haven't been myself since the accident.

[ Old English mēseolf "me self" ( self in the obsolete sense of "same")]

Word Usage

The use of myself and other -self pronouns (reflexive pronouns) when they do not refer to the subjects of sentences is not appropriate in formal contexts. Write: The coach chose Sarah and me [not myself]. Yet another problem is the use of myself in sentences like these: On behalf of my wife and myself, I want to thank you for your support. My wife and myself are pleased to have participated, instead of My wife and I want to thank you for your support. In the second sentence myself, as an object, cannot form part of a compound subject. The writer should have used My wife and I are pleased to have participated.
