Arrogant and dumb: Local celeb hacks slam Miss Universe Riyo Mori
"There were loads of reporters who saw her who said the first thing that came to mind was 'How the hell did she become Miss Universe?'" an entertainment beat reporter tells Shukan Shincho. "I thought that making up her eyes to emphasize her 'Oriental Exoticism' isn't a look that really appeals to Japanese.
"What really shocked me was the arrogant way she went about things. She used a microphone to point at the reporters asking her questions, and the way she stood with her hands on her hips as she talked created a bad impression. That might be the way they do things in America, but a female Japanese performer would never act that way. She looked down on Japan, too, by saying that she had no idea who her favorite Japanese performer was. And when one reporter asked her what it felt like to have been chosen as the world's most beautiful women, she spat, 'That's a mistake. Miss Universe is not a beauty contest.' That got most of the reporters tittering."
Mori is apparently taking steps to try and gain some popular support.
Mori can take heart from the success of Kurara Chibana, the runner-up in last year's Miss Universe contest who now works as a reporter for a TV current affairs program called "News Zero."
But the entertainment beat reporter is not too bullish about the 20-year-old beauty queen's chances in Japan's cutthroat entertainment world.
"Considering she won the title, she has fair grounds to think she'll do better (than Chibana). But she's not really the best speaker in the world and hasn't got any of the intellect apparent in Chibana, a graduate of the prestigious Sophia University," the showbiz reporter tells Shukan Shincho. "And with the arrogance that she's got, it makes the average woman working on TV look a lot more attractive." (By Ryann Connell) July 13, 2007

Judy Ann Santos lands the cover of YES! 100 Most Beautiful Stars
YES! editor-in-chief Jo-Ann Maglipon explains their cover girl choice: "We call her the girl with the It Quality—the girl with the special something that sets her apart from the traditionally prettier, fairer, taller, leaner stars around. And she is our choice to represent all the 99 other beautiful people we have chosen from showbiz."
The It list is divided into several categories: "Faces the camera loves," "Instant stardom," "Classic beauty," "On-screen chemistry," "Staying power," and "Gene pool," to name a few.
Here are some of the stars that made it on the list:
Aga Muhlach and his wife Charlene's children, Andres and Atasha, made it to the "Tomorrow's celebrities" category. The fraternal twins are making heads turn with their infectious smile from their Daddy Aga and wit from Mommy Charlene. At five years old, they're already endorsing Jollibee's fast-food chain with their parents. It's all in the genes!
Although halfway around the world, in Paris, France to be exact, KC Concepcion still manages to sell magazines she appears in. Although her star-status is a given, with Sharon Cuneta as her mom and Gabby Concepcion as dad, she is one celebrity to watch. Like her parents, she is as attractive as she is talented.
Of Lucy Torres-Gomez YES! magazine says: "Her virginal face, svelte figure, and luminous complexion grace the covers of many magazines, and she has become an aspirational icon for readers." The soft-spoken wife of Richard Gomez is one beauty that cannot be ignored, hence landing her as one of the "Cover girls."
Catch the special issue of YES! magazine to know who else made it on the list of 100 Most Beautiful Stars. Now available!

Miss Earth on the bandwagon
July 14, 2007 12:00am
IT SEEMS all you have to do these days is put "Earth" in the title of an event to make it worthy.
Take Live Earth, where rock stars preached about how we should live to save the planet then flew home in private jets.
The motto for Live Earth should really have been "do as we say, not as we do" .
Take Mother Earth herself - also known by her stage name Madonna.
Her annual carbon footprint, according to Carbon Footprint representative John Buckley, is 1018 tonnes - about 92 times the 11 tonnes of an average person.
Must be all those worthy flights to Africa choosing cute children to save.
But Madonna also has financial links to some of the world's biggest polluters.
The Ray of Light Foundation, a charitable fund established by the star to support her worthy causes, has $4.2 million of shares in companies including Alcoa - the American aluminium giant, the Ford Motor Company and Weyerhaeuser, an international forest products company.
All have been criticised by environmentalists.
However, never mind that Live Earth has achieved nothing - except maybe an increase in record sales - because now I give you the next worthy cause: Miss Earth Australia.
That's right. Forget Miss World and Miss Universe. This is the "next generation in beauty pageants in which the wellbeing of the environment is nurtured by attractive and dynamic Australian women.
"Miss Earth Australia is (also) our only national beauty pageant that simultaneously promotes young women and environmental issues."
But do these women look like they use organic make-up and wind machines instead of blow dryers?
Are their locks coloured by natural dyes and their outfits made from only natural materials? Are their tiaras made of stones from the earth?
So what does it take to be a Miss Earth Australia entrant and hopefully go on to Manila to compete for the Miss Earth International crown?
According to Miss Earth Australia president Robert James: "Our candidates come from communities in every part of Australia where they encourage locals to plant trees and to adopt many other effective pain-free steps."
Whatever that means.
"Trees are objects of beauty which clean our heavily polluted atmosphere by extracting carbon dioxide," he tells us.
I wonder if that logging island of Tasmania has an entrant?
For anyone wanting to attend this show-stopping (but more importantly worthy) event that will include "singing and dancing", then ride your environmentally friendly bike to the Enmore Theatre on September 13 safe in the knowledge you are doing your bit to save the Earth.
Poo and his women stink
FEW reality television programs have sunk so low as Channel 7's Age of Love.
Watching 30-year-old Mark Philippoussis (pictured) look like he's going to be physically ill at the prospect of dating older women confirms long-held suspicions he's an immature, superficial bloke.
But when, in the following episode, a group of bitchy younger beauties arrives to compete for his affection against the older "cougars", you can only cringe.
They must have the combined IQ (Philippoussis included) of two ferrets.
By episode three, it has become a textbook example of how women can be their own worst enemies.
A 40-something cougar tragically admits: "I'm here because I want to be in love and because the biological clock is ticking."
Meanwhile her younger competitors snidely refer to menopause, with one bimbette even crassly declaring: "We're going to win because we can still have babies."
SILVERCHAIR frontman Daniel Johns' sense of humour left nobody laughing this week. Having told Triple J listeners he spent an afternoon smoking marijuana with his wife Natalie Imbruglia, Opposition environment spokesman Peter Garrett and U2 lead singer Bono, he was later forced into an embarrassing backdown.
Probably only after someone pointed out to him the ramifications of saying a federal MP and an outspoken anti-drug campaigner do drugs.
Notable by its absence, though, was any denial that his wife doesn't.
THE idiocy - and vanity - of some parents knows no bounds. To pay photographers to digitally remove pimples, whiten teeth and even do "nose jobs" on their offspring's school snaps is surely damaging.
Granted I have cringed when my parents produced old school photos of me to boyfriends but at least I recognise myself in them.
Imagine the battering it does to a child's self-esteem and body image.
Kids look the way they do because of their parents' genes. Perhaps some couples had plastic surgery before they met and pretend they have no idea why they have such ugly offspring.

BEIJING OLYMPICS PRESS CONFERENCE
Speaking of a desired alignment with the international sporting event, Mrs Morley told a packed press conference at the Crowne Plaza Beijing: “We would be very honoured and proud of this association and would take our role very seriously. This would be an historic occasion, working together to promote tourism to China around the world.
“Miss World has a history of working closely with charities across the world, and it is a pleasure to be bringing the Miss World Final 2007 back to China.”
Miss World 2006 Tat’ana Kucharova added her hopes for the opportunity to work together with the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
“I have been to Beijing a few times and it is such a wonderful city that I very much enjoy coming back here,’ she said. “It will be a great honour for us to bring the contestants to China for Miss World 2007. I especially look forward to sharing my knowledge of Beijing with them.“Most of all, we would all be so proud of an association with the China All Stars Support and Promotion Group for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games."
The 57th Miss World will be crowned in Sanya on December 1st – at the end of a four-week festival that will take the contestants to Olympic sites and cities across China, including Beijing, where it is hoped that the young women will host an event in support of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
“I know that the young women will be so excited when they hear about what we have planned for them,’ said Tat’ana.
MISS WORLD TOURS CHINA IN PREPARATION FOR THE 57th MISS WORLD FINAL
The visit commenced at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Sanya, the official hosting hotel for the 57th Miss World Final during the four week festival in November. While there, Miss World took full advantage of the beautiful white sandy beach and cooling blue South China Sea, before meeting with local dignitaries.
Then the group hit the road for a whistle stop tour of some of China’s numerous sites of significant interest – some of which might welcome the contestants of Miss World 2007 in November.
Highlight of the tour for Tat’ana was definitely when she had the honour of visiting a seven-day-old panda at the world famous Chengdu Panda Research Breeding Centre. The frail baby panda is unique in captivity as being one of twins born at one of China’s leading research facilities.
“That was amazing, something I never thought I would see,’ said Tat’ana. “It was so small and pink, it looked really fragile. But then it stretched its little legs and moved its head as if it were dreaming. It was such a special moment for me."
While visiting the centre, Tat’ana also spent time with about 30 other pandas all from three months to adult. All had a similar effect on the visitors, as they played games and ate their plentiful supplies of bamboo.
Tat’ana and the touring group also visited China’s third largest city, Chongqing – a city famous for its staggering night scene as everything from tower blocks to small boats on the river are lit up in a spectacular display of neon colour.
While there, she took part in a special promotion by Sanya to highlight the benefits of the Hainan resort and encourage residents of Chongqing – one of the hottest places in China – to visit the tropical paradise of Sanya. She took to the stage in the city centre, before visiting exhibition stands and meeting local people and children in the bustling streets.
The 57th Miss World Final will see girls from more than 110 nations travelling to China for the four-week festival, culminating in the glittering staged final in Sanya on Saturday 1st December.

GMA 7 mounts its 1st short film fest
The Kapuso network takes talent development seriously, says Ida Henares, assistant vice president and head of GMA Artist Center (GMAAC).
“We have various workshops all year round,” Henares volunteers. The center started offering said training for outsiders and employees alike two years ago.
As culminating project for the Film and TV Production and Acting workshops, adds talent development coordinator GA Villafuerte, the students produced short films.
Now GMA 7, in cooperation with the Independent Filmmakers Cooperative (IFC), has mounted its first festival of short films, “Sindié: Sa Pagsisimula ng Indie” at Robinsons Galleria’s IndieSine.
The 14 films, products of the workshops in June and October 2006, and April 2007, are: “Katha,” “Saka,” “Mga Kuwento Kong Sana,” “Taong Grasa,” “Otra Ves,” “Sidewalk,” “Kasal,” “Baritada” and “In a Flash” (8 minutes.); “Lea,” “Batang Bato,” “Binhi,” and “Photo Express” (20); and “Glen Con Banyo” (3).
Jenny Donato, events and publicity specialist, says this summer’s acting students had Bembol Roco, German Moreno, Tina de Guzman, Roence Santos and Nanding Josef as facilitators.
The Film and TV Production workshops were handled by indie filmmakers Jon Red, Raymond Red, Robert Quebral, Cesar Hernando and Paolo Villaluna; and TV director Ruel Bayani.
People’s Choice
Acting workshops had 45 to 50 students each in the kids, teens and adults divisions, says Villafuerte. Film and TV Production had 35 enrollees.
The festival began yesterday and runs until July 10. Admission ticket is P100 each, good for all 14 films. Moviegoers are invited to vote for the People’s Choice award to be given out on July 8, along with citations for Best Short Film, Director, Actress, Actor, Supporting Actress and Actor, Child Actress and Actor, Cinematography, and Production Design

Tarantino Thrilla in Cinemanila
Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill) will be hitting Philippine shores in August to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award during special ceremonies in the 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival. Tarantino will be receiving the distinction for his iconic contributions to world cinema and continued support to the proliferation and promotion of Asian and independent films. Tarantino's love for Asian films has inspired him to make use of various cinematic styles from films of the region such as wire kung-fu scenes, sword fights and stylized action scenes in his own movies. His admiration for Asian cinema has made him one of its most significant advocates; the release of Zhang Yimou's Hero and Wong Kar Wai's Chungking Express in the United States were made possible by Tarantino.
Renowned for cult favorites like Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, Tarantino has won accolades and citations from various groups, including an Oscar nomination for his direction of the critically acclaimed film Pulp Fiction. In 2004, he was selected to be the head of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival.
Catch renowned director Quentin Tarantino as he graces the Festival this August. The Cinemanila International Film Festival, now on its 9th year, will have its official run from 8 to 19 August 2007. It will showcase the best of local and foreign cinema, including recent winners from the Berlin and Cannes film festivals. A special ASEAN Night celebrating the works of the region's best filmmakers will open the event on 8 August. Cinemanila will also be having a special Focus on the films of Bollywood (10 August), South Africa (11 August), and Turkey (12 August). Everyone is invited to these screenings and to the seminars and workshops. These include Master Classes in Directing (10-11 August) and Scriptwriting (12-13 August), a seminar on the Importance of Film Archiving in the Philippines (14 August), and a seminar on Indie Filmmaking (15-16 August).
The CIFF is organized jointly by the Independent Cinema Association of the Philippines (ICAP), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and a specially commissioned inter-agency committee.

STOP AIDS Project launches "HIV Is No Picnic" ad campaign.
"We know that some people will be shocked by the ‘in your face’ nature of the ads," said David Evans, STOP AIDS Project’s program director. "But the HIV positive guys who make up our Positive Force Program have been waiting for an opportunity to tell negative guys how tough it can be to live with HIV. We consider this a truth in advertising campaign."
"A lot of people think that the worst is over," said Geof Gray, 52, a Positive Force participant who is featured in one of the ads. "They’re not looking at the numbers."Gray, a nursing student at San Francisco State University, has experienced facial lipoatrophy—also known as facial wasting—as a side effect of his anti-HIV medications. "At first I thought my cheekbones looked a little better," he said. "But then it became obvious that I had that ‘AIDS look.’ It’s hard getting up in the morning. There it is staring me in the mirror. I get up, I brush my teeth, and, oh yeah, I have AIDS. I can’t ever forget."
Other ads feature participants talking about life with the constant threat of diarrhea, a common side effect of both HIV itself and most anti-HIV medications; night sweats; and "Crix belly," the distended stomach and abnormally located weight gain that has been associated with taking protease inhibitors.
"People need to know that despite the advances in treatments, gay men are still dying from this disease," said Les Pappas, president of San Francisco–based Better World Advertising, the agency that designed the campaign. "And the guys who aren’t dying are dealing with some pretty serious health problems. It’s better than before, but having HIV can still be a living hell."
The STOP AIDS Project, founded in 1984, works to prevent HIV transmission among all gay and bisexual men in San Francisco through multicultural, community-based organizing. Visit www.stopaids. org for more information.
