Rampant raunchiness has growing numbers of Japanese youngsters running the risk of blindness, shouts Weekly Playboy (11/25).

Rather than anything to do with the old stories that used to be told to guilt-ridden Catholic schoolboys, the threat to young peoples eyesight is coming from the rapid proliferation of those afflicted with sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia.

Mucous membranes in the eyes and reproductive organs are structurally similar. Bacteria can spread from either, Hokkaido University Prof. Shigeaki Ono tells Weekly Playboy. Looking at how the diseases have been transmitted shows that most are picked up after sessions with sex workers.

Ono estimates most of those in their teens or 20s afflicted with STDs picked them up through oral sex. Gonorrhea has particularly harmful effects, causing pus to drip from the eyes. If treatment is delayed for too long, the gonorrhea bacteria can penetrate the eyes cornea and cause blindness.

Many antibiotics arent very effective in fighting gonorrhea, Ono says. Treatment should be sought as soon as possible. It may require an injection into the eyeball.

Apparently, the spread of STDs is like wildfire, and not just through sex workers.

All sorts of STDs are spreading among young people now. Especially amongst those who enjoy having the woman sitting on a guys face, adult entertainment industry writer Yoshiya Fukabue tells Weekly Playboy. Proof of this can be seen in the popularity of adult videos where the woman plays the initiator and goes all out for weaker men.

Moodyz, one of Japans biggest adult movie producers, confirms the assumption, saying such flicks have been among its best sellers every month since about last year.

Men tend to get weaker when the economy is bad, Hitokazu Saito, a Moodyz producer, tells Weekly Playboy. Most in the industry seem to think that guys have become more passive.

Perhaps even more frightening are the prospects of what all this promiscuity promises down the track. Japan Red Cross has recently noticed that an alarming number of Japanese teens have contracted deadly hepatitis B, with most cases picked up during sexual encounters.

Hepatitis B is picked up in an almost identical fashion to AIDS. If hepatitis B cases are on the increase, it probably means the number of AIDS patients is on the rise, too, writer Fukabue tells Weekly Playboy. What we may be seeing now is a curtain-raiser to a massive outbreak of AIDS.
