December 19, 2002

As usual, Japanese were shocked to learn that one of their own had shamed the nation overseas again earlier this month after superstar diva Britney Spears filed a restraining order against a Yokohama man.

But the embarrassment felt has been heightened because the man who had been pestering Spears is, in fact, one of the country's smartest people and is an elite academic.

Masahiko Shizawa was ordered by the Los Angeles Superior Court to stay at least 900 meters away from Spears after he had stalked her since September, even tracking her down to country retreats and holding up signs at her that read, "I'm chasing you."

Far from being some sort of freak, Shizawa has actually received a doctorate from Tokyo University, Japan's most exalted tertiary institution.

"You can pick up a star map of Hollywood for about five bucks and stories have been written about Britney's home in Kenwood, Louisiana, so it would have been relatively easy for Shizawa to find those places," an L.A.-based newspaper reporter tells Shukan Shincho (12/26). "Since breaking up with Justin Timberlake from 'N Sync, she's basically stopped all her activities. It'd be really hard to find out where she was. And it wouldn't be easy at all to find her holiday homes in New York and Florida. Still, Shizawa speaks flawless English and I'm sure he's been exchanging e-mail with some of Spears' wildest fans in the States who probably told him where to go."

Those who know Shizawa were surprised to learn that he'd spent so much money and effort into terrorizing Spears.

"He's the oldest of three boys in his family, but he's still a bachelor. He's in his 40s and still lives with his parents. He's got this pale face and is quiet and creepy. I was surprised he was active enough to become a stalker," one of Shizawa's Yokohama neighbors tells Shukan Shincho.

Shizawa's academic background puts him in the elite of the elite. He graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in electrical engineering, followed by a Master's. From there, he worked for telecommunications giant NTT for three years, during which time he wrote a thesis that earned him a doctorate. He has received awards for his research in electrical engineering and received a national government grant to continue his studies with the posh Japan Science and Technology Corp.

"Research periods with a corporation are usually of three years duration. The chances of getting a grant are about one in 20," a JST spokesman tells Shukan Shincho, adding that recipients are eligible to draw on a budget of up to 40 million yen a year. "Actually, Shizawa's a really nervous type who worries too much about trifling things. In the time he was here, he didn't produce a thing. We'd ask him to at least give us a progress report, but he'd just say his research wasn't progressing too well. He's the only grant recipient who's ever failed to hand in even a report."

Considering Shizawa was living in the lap of luxury at taxpayers' expense, yet still failed to produce anything, wouldn't it be appropriate if he were made to return all the money he was given? Apparently not, according to the JST.

"About 2 1/2 years after Shizawa started his research, he had a nervous breakdown," a JST spokesman tells Shukan Shincho. "We were worried about making his condition worse, so decided not to ask him to return the money. If he completely stops his research some time from now, we'll definitely ask him to give back the funds."

Pepsi's Child

Beyonce replaces Britney as Pepsi spokesperson. Spears could return some day, but her contract's up by Brian Hiatt

Beyoncé, can you handle this? Destiny's Child frontwoman and solo artist Beyoncé Knowles is replacing Britney Spears as the pop-star voice of Pepsi, according to a press release from the soda company. The announcement comes as Spears' contract expires, the New York Times reported. Knowles will appear in two TV commercials for Pepsi, which may also sponsor a solo tour next year. ''We were really looking to take the work in a different direction,'' a Pepsi spokesperson told the New York Times.

Spears' spokesperson told the Times that she might be willing to return for more Pepsi ads, while Pepsi said that new Britney ads were possible but wouldn't happen anytime soon. This year, Spears has faced declining album sales, a high-profile break-up with Justin Timberlake, a failed restaurant investment, and a much-discussed aborted concert in Mexico City, among other obstacles. Knowles, meanwhile, appeared in ''Austin Powers: Goldmember'' (Britney had a cameo in the same movie), and is planning to release her first solo album next year. She and her Destiny's Child bandmates are said to be on hiatus.

“Britney’s Bday Party: A Chilly Tale”

Well, well, well… What to say about tonight, besides that it was darn cold! but where to begin? This past week has been sort of a crazy little whirlwind for me!

It started out on Thursday… John (my assistant) and I had started to prepare for Britney’s Party early. We were going to meet up to go shopping and as I’m on the way to meet him I get a call. “Hey, Fe is at this store that I’m at right now!” So he says hi to her and she tells him what she had been up to, Christmas shopping and such, and by the time I got anywhere close to where they were she was already gone. So John and I meet up afterwards and he told me about how nice she was again and that she had remembered him from last Friday. So we continued to shop around Soho we went to some of Brit’s favorite places – like The Patricia Field store, Dolce&Gabana, and Anthropologie. On the way home we passed Bryan’s apartment and I had happened to have the pics of him and I from Friday with me so I decided to write him a little note and leave the pics with his doorman… ( I wasn’t sure if the package would actually get to him, but I found out on Saturday night that it did)

So Friday rolls around and I am still trying to find what I am going to wear to this party!! So we go back to the east village and as we pass by Bry’s place (it’s right by all the best shops and eateries!) We see one of Brit’s SUVs outside, and the driver happened to be the guy I knew! So we went up and chatted with him for a bit, he said he was waiting for someone and a few minutes later Big Rob came out the door. They said goodbye and drove away… How weird?! We kept running into these people! So Saturday finally came around, it felt like it took years, but it was here! I pick out a super “Britney-esk “outfit and John arrives around 9ish we heard that the party had started early so we went to check it out.

The party was held at Tanda a very chic and very beautiful restaurant on the east side on Park Ave. We arrived and the doorman said that the party had not started yet So john and I decided to go get some drinks and wait to make our appearance until the party picked up a bit. So we went to the restaurant where we met Brit the week before and had a drink, then we took a hop skip and a jump over to Nyla – now, “The Restaurant” at the Dylan, and had another drink. A group of girls were having a party there and as I walked in Big C, my big rob looking friend, escorted me in… They all gasp! They of course thought I was Britney. They asked their waiter to ask me to take some pics with them and so I did! It was so fun being there and getting that reaction again. So around 11ish we decide to head back to Tanda!

Wow, what a night! We met Natalie Portman and Benjamin Bratt. Dan Aykroyd was there with his family, and Zoë Saldana was there too! (what a sweetie!!) Bryan, Fe, Mr. Jamie, and even Lynne had flown in from Louisiana to be here! There were a lot of Kentwood natives there tonight, friends and family that Brit had flown in, and even people that worked on her tour! We got pics with a lot of people but Brit was pretty inaccessible because of the crowd.

We talked to Zoë for a while though about her new movie “Drumline” and how she’s been! And we also stopped to chat with Fe for a few minutes, the drivers and bodyguards were nice as always and we met one her stylists, Bart!

The gift bags given out at the party were really great too! The white bag was filled with lotions and perfumes; let’s see… there is a little Hard Candy nail polish kit, some “Bibo” products – like a cleansing lotion and sunless tanner, and some Quel amour perfume (kinda flowery and sweet) and so much more!

Later after the party, we were invited to go hang out with Bryan and his friends at a bar in the West Village close to my place, we had a drink and chatted with him and his fiancé and some of the other people who we had met at the party- one of the girls who knows Brit very well told us that Brit is recording in New York and it’s going great and that she is really loving the new sound she’s got going on, she also said Brit will be home for a few days at Christmas but will be right back up to NY to continue recording.

So after all that craziness we finally decided it was time to head home around 3:30! Man, those Spears sure know how to party!! Can’t wait till my next adventure with Bry, Brit and the gang! Stay tuned!

I did see a preview where Barbara asked Justin if Britney cheated on him <i>(why a 70 year old award winning journalist needs to know about the goings on of two pop stars is beyond me)</i>. Anyway, Justin responded by saying something about not being perfect, not judging, yadda, yadda, yadda, young love. What's up with that???

Justin And Britney At War, Magazine Cover Story Declares

In just eight months' time, Justin Timberlake's feelings toward former love Britney Spears have gone from hurt to hate. At least that's what Us Weekly alleges in its current cover story, "Britney Vs. Justin: The War Is On."

The article, which surfaced on New York newsstands Wednesday and will be available nationwide Friday, suggests that pop music's hottest couple are feuding like the Hatfields and the McCoys, singling out Timberlake's video for "Cry Me a River" as the latest, and loudest, bomb dropped.

The video, which premiered November 25, features 18-year-old model/actress Lauren Hastings playing what could only be construed as a Britney look-alike in a newsboy cap and tinted pink sunglasses, accessories Britney has been known to wear. Timberlake is seen spying on his supposed ex getting into a car with another man, and subsequently plots his revenge. He breaks into her sprawling house and leaves a tape of himself half-heartedly making out with another woman running on her TV.

Although Timberlake has professed that nearly every career choice is his own, he told a "TRL" audience on the day the video premiered that the idea for the "Cry Me a River" clip came from director Francis Lawrence. And while the clip's sentiment — that Britney cheated on Justin, allegedly with choreographer Wade Robson, Us says (Robson denies it) — might be unmistakable to some fans, the 'NSYNC singer skirted around what everyone wanted to hear by saying, "The video is not about her. The video is about me."

Spears, meanwhile, won't fess up to the connection either. Calling in to "TRL" on Friday, she denied there was even a resemblance between herself and her supposed doppelganger. "The last time I looked in the mirror, I didn't think I really looked like her." When asked what she thought of the clip, Spears would only say, "Boys will be boys."

Despite this, the article quotes a friend of Spears as saying Timberlake employed the tabloid tactic purely for publicity because his album, Justified, wasn't selling as well as expected. (His solo debut has sold more than 1 million copies after five weeks). Another family source said that Britney and her mom, Lynne, are having a good chuckle over the whole thing.

While the Us Weekly article chiefly focuses on the "Cry Me a River" video to support its cover claim, other munitions incidents are cited. In October, Britney was seen in London wearing a T-shirt that read, "Dump Him," which provoked some to insist it was a message to Timberlake's alleged current girlfriend, actress Alyssa Milano, though the popular sloganeering top is readily available at many retail shops. And she was also spotted hanging around Timberlake's supposed rival, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter.

While promoting Justified, Timberlike slyly revealed intimate details concerning the couple's sex life he had to know would get her attention, since she publicly proclaimed her chastity years ago. During a New York radio interview, he admitted to having oral sex with Spears, and during his 20/20 tell-all, he blatantly hinted that the two have had intercourse. In a Details magazine December cover story, Timberlake took shots at Spears' career choices, saying "If she had a clue, she wouldn't have made ['Crossroads']."

Us steals some of its own thunder, however, by including instances that suggest their parting was amicable. The piece notes that Timberlake said he "would never ever do anything to disrespect [Britney] or degrade her," in an interview with Rosie O'Donnell in April, after citing a quote from Spears saying that the pair "still talk all the time," though they consciously avoided each other at the Teen Choice Awards in August. A source from the Timberlake camp told the magazine that Spears invited Justin to her birthday party on December 2 in her childhood home in Kentwood, Louisiana.

Neither Spears nor Timberlake's spokespeople would comment on the article. "We're just going to continue to take the high road," a Spears rep told Us, and neither camp returned MTV News' calls by press time.

In the two and a half years since Us magazine increased its frequency to become Us Weekly, the publication has garnered a reputation for running fantastic headlines without any confirmation from the parties involved. Recent cover stories claimed that Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe were an item, and that Eminem and Kim Mathers were back together. The magazine's source in the Kidman-Crowe piece later admitted he lied about seeing the two involved at a Mexican resort because he was drunk and simply told Us' writer what the reporter wanted to hear. And Eminem's people wouldn't comment on whether the volatile couple have resurrected their romance.

VegasBeat -- Timothy McDarrah: Celebrities in concert with party scene

Once again, it was whiplash night in Las Vegas -- heads were spinning to keep up at the celebrity-clogged parties held after the Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Monday.

Early in the evening, Avril Lavigne gave a private concert in the Palms' "Real World" suite. She couldn't play elsewhere on the property because she is underage and is not allowed to perform where alcohol is served.

Later, at ghostbar, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst -- who spent most of his time during the Billboard show sitting quietly and playing video games on his cell phone -- hosted a party for Puddle of Mudd.

<i><b>And for a couple who deny they are a couple, well, you could hardly slide a playing card between the noses of Tara "American Pie" Reid and 'N Sync-er JC Chasez at the ghostbar bash.</i></b>

Among those pointing and staring were Cedric the Entertainer, Tyson Beckford and various "Real World Las Vegas" cast members.

The parties at the Palms were serviceable, but the heavy rock 'n' roll action was at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel.

A crowd that included Holly Robinson Peete, Shannon Elizabeth, Toby Keith, Don Marrandino, Vince Neil, Huey Lewis, Nickelback, Creed, Darryl "DMC" McDaniel, Nelly, Kerry Simon, Chuck D from Public Enemy, the new KISS 101.9-FM morning team of Trejo & Athena, all the "X" women from the hot show at Aladdin, Stefanie Hastings (Prince's old gal pal) and a selection of other rock 'n' roll types went absolutely beserk when Busta Rhymes and Justin Timberlake took the stage.

The unlikely pair started singing "Like I Love You," the single from Timberlake's new solo CD, "Justified."

Then an all-star jam led by the Neptunes -- (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, the pop-rap industry's hottest producers) -- continued for nearly an hour with much of the talent in the room taking a turn.

The most awestruck group in the crowd was easily the pinstriped posse of Chevrolet executives and their guests.

Over the weekend the Hard Rock hosted a special memorabilia show called "Chevrolet: Celebrating 50 Years of Rock and Roll," and many of the visiting car cats stuck around for the big party.

All 5 members where at the unveiling of the wax figures last night. They looked really cute. JC brought 'friend' Tara Reid and they were all matching and cosy. Why they deny it is beyond me. Ha Ha. Anyways the figures look just like them. It is freaking. Pictures at wireimage.com

JC will be on TRL today to premire his video for BMU. The clips have been interesting. And I love how Tara is in the video straddling him and such. Ha

Justin will be on TRL tomorrow to talk about his video, his injury, and probably will comment on Britney as usual.

Unlucky

Britney seeks restraining order against alleged stalker. The singer says a 41-year-old Japanese man has trespassed at her home and one of her parents' homes and deluged her with notes and photos of himself by Gary Susman

See, it's not just teenage girls that like Britney Spears. A 41-year-old Japanese man named Masahiko Shizawa is apparently an overly ardent fan, so ardent that Spears petitioned the courts in Los Angeles on Monday to file an injunction against him for allegedly stalking her across the country since September, according to wire service reports.

According to Reuters, court papers say Shizawa has trespassed at her Los Angeles home and one of her parents' homes in Louisiana. The papers also say that, when ordered off Spears' property, he has refused to leave, the Associated Press reports. He has also allegedly sent her love notes and photographs of himself, including one inscribed, ''I'm chasing you.''

Spears' attorney asked to have Shizawa, a native of Yokohama, barred from coming within 1,000 feet of the 21-year-old or contacting her in any way. It is not clear if the court has granted the petition.

I was just doing a little search of the net and came across this interview with Jenn.

What is 'true friendship'? You may be surprised to learn what it means to Jennifer McGill who grew up in front of the cameras on "The New Mickey Mouse Club." Jenn counts 37 ex-mice including superstars JC Chasez, and Justin Timberlake of 'NSYNC and Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell, Lindsey Alley plus many other talented, famous young people among her circle of close, personal pals.
Thanks to Jennifer McGill, you're about to discover secrets of relationships that keep this unique group of a generation's most popular and successful performers together. The insights revealed here may even help you build or improve your own friendships!

Jennifer was 10-years old when she became a professional entertainer. Cast as a Mouseketeer on Disney's MMC, Jenn would be only one of three 'Mice' (her friends Lindsey and Josh Ackerman are the others) who would remain on the show throughout its entire run that ended in 1994. During the show's seven seasons, Jennifer and her fellow Mousketeers performed on TV and toured the world entertaining millions of people. But during that time they were also forming the basis for star-crossed friendships destined to influence each of their lives in many ways, and last, hopefully - forever!

After MMC, Jenn graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and stayed in New York to pursue her musical career to achieve outstanding recognition for her tremendous talent. "Maggie" (A Chorus Line), "The Witch" (Into The Woods), "Marty" (Grease), and "Leading Player" (Pippin) are a few of the roles in which she won acclaim. Jennifer has also been involved in many independent New York projects, including originating the role of "Suzie" in the Off-Broadway musical poperetta, "The Children."

Musically speaking, Jennifer McGill does it all. She is renown for her studio recordings and for directing live performance, yet she also enjoys inspiring her voice students how to blend musical theatre technique with "...soulful singing from the heart."

Busy, popular, successful and dedicated, 'Jenn' (as her friends call her) is currently teaching, performing, writing and recording with producers around the world for her upcoming debut solo album. Yet even with that schedule, she has kindly taken the time to speak here, exclusively for you, her friends @ CyberSpacers.com!

"Jamie" played an old lady security guard (probably the funniest thing that girl has done on that show) who didn't believe Justin was who he said he was and wouldn't let him pass. The funniest part had to be when "Jamie" planted this big kiss on Justin. I was laughing so hard I almost missed when afterwards she said something like, "No wonder you're flying solo!" LOL!!!!

Britney Spears Bails On Her New York Restaurant, Nyla
11.27.2002 9:28 AM EST

First Justin, now Nyla.

Britney Spears has "terminated her relationship" with the New York restaurant she partnered with in March, citing mismanagement and "management's failure to keep her fully apprised," according to a statement released Tuesday.

"I wish the restaurant and its current ownership continued success," Spears said in the statement after noting that she had no involvement in the day-to-day affairs of Nyla and never derived any money or other benefits from the chic eatery at the Dylan Hotel.

Spears said creditors dragged her into their payment disputes and any suggestion that she should be responsible for the debt of the restaurant is without merit.

Last month three vendors filed an involuntary petition of bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court against Pinky Enterprises LLC, which runs Nyla, alleging they had not been paid more than $25,000 owed to them.

Spears partnered with celebrity restaurateur Bobby Ochs on Nyla, which is named after the postal abbreviations for New York and Louisiana, Spears' home state. Ochs did not return calls on Tuesday.

While the restaurant had served Cajun cuisine since it opened in June, management recently changed the menu to regional American food with an Italian flair in hopes of increasing business.

With Nyla's troubles behind her, Spears can now focus on recording her next album and expanding her acting career.

JC Chasez, Tara Reid Find Love Among Wreckage For 'Blowin' Me Up'

"He's a very powerful songwriter. I didn't even know he did ballads. I was impressed." — video director Bryan Barber

JC Chasez insists he and Tara Reid are just buddies, but in his new video they are a lot more.

And according to Bryan Barber, who directed the clip for "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)," the 'NSYNC singer and "American Pie" actress make a great couple.

"The chemistry between the two of them is dynamic," Barber said Thursday. "We were pondering who to get as our leading lady and we went out a couple nights before the video and she was right before our face. The chemistry was there, but I had to convince both of them. They thought about it and said, 'Let's do it.' They gave me a lot on screen. I'm excited."

Barber described the video, shot earlier this month at a junkyard in the San Fernando Valley, as "a rock and roll version of 'Mad Max.' "

"We got cars being crushed, monster trucks, explosions, weird-looking people," Barber said. "We got pyrotechnics and a drag race type thing. It's a real fun video."

Dallas Austin, who produced the single, also appears in the video, driving a monster truck and smashing cars. Austin is executive producer of the movie "Drumline" and its soundtrack, which features Chasez's first solo single.

Chasez approached Barber after seeing his video for Outkast's "The Whole World."

"It's totally different from what he's done with 'NSYNC," the director said. "He wanted to go left of center and that's what we did. We had some fun and presented JC in a whole new way."

Aside from "funky choreography," sets built from auto wreckage and a post-apocalyptic wardrobe, the video features a lot of drummers. "Other than that, there's nothing to do with [the movie]," Barber said.

"Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)" was released to select radio stations on Tuesday and will hit all formats on December 9, according to Chasez's Jive Records spokesperson.

The "Drumline" soundtrack, which features Joe and Jadakiss, Trick Daddy, Jermaine Dupri and others, is due December 10.

Chasez's video will debut that week and the film will open on December 13.

While Chasez has not yet confirmed that he will release a solo album, Barber said the singer played him several songs.

"It's incredible," he said. "He's a very powerful songwriter. I didn't even know he did ballads. I was impressed."

I've been attending this boring-a$$ week long training for my job. Well, one of the presenters was a woman who was blind. She talked about being more sensitive to people with disabilities. Today I learned that instead of recognizing the disability first, we should recognize the person.

So, for example, instead of saying He/She's blind, we should say, the woman/man or person who is blind.

So anyway, the woman asked a question. I can't remember the question, but it was something like, "How many people here, blah, blah..?" Before she could say another word, people raised their hands.

Then she said, "Now how many of you have your hands raised, knowing I'm blind??" LOL!!!

They're idiots. I'm sorry, they are <i>people</i> who are idiots!!!

People are funny.

While flipping channels, I saw JC on Access Hollywood on the set of his new video. I can't wait for this video!! In the one scene, JC and "his crew" were dancing in this junkyard with drumsticks. Okay, I don't know if it was an actual junkyard, but it looked like one. JC said the cars in the video were used in the Mad Max movies. I hope there's a Making the Video. He denied dating Tara Reid, saying they're only buddys. He also said they just met and were introduced by mutual friends (um, JC...isn't that how a relationship usually starts?) Whatever. He was looking oh so bangable!!

'N Sync's JC: "We're Not Broken Up!"
Monday, November 18, 2002

As Justin Timberlake's Justified album grapples with Eminem's 8 Mile soundtrack atop the charts, 'N Sync lovers worry that solo careers are tearing the boy band apart. How do the pop heartthrobs respond to fans who cry, "I Want You Back" — as in together? "We're not broken up," JC Chasez tells TV Guide Online. "We just basically hit the pause button.

"We've been banging it out hardcore for seven years," the affable hipster explains. "People forget that we've been doing this since we were like 17 years old. Justin was, like, 14 when we began this! It's been going on that long, and people don't even realize. We need a breather."

But that doesn't mean they're saying, "Bye Bye Bye," kids. Sums up Chasez: "We're each going to do a bunch of stuff, then come back together and make a brand new album." He adds that 'N Sync's official reunion will happen "probably at the end of next year. What's going to be great about it is because we're going out to experience different things, we'll all come back with something new to bring to the table and talk about. It will be very refreshing, with new ideas!

"In the meantime," the 26-year-old crooner continues, "I just finished doing a single for a movie called Drumline. I'm also starting a writers' forum website called OnlyArtists.com in December or January. It'll be a place where songwriters can get public feedback, instead of throwing out a song and letting the charts tell you how it's doing. I'll start it up with my own original material I'm writing, and take the fans' feedback. It's a fun little experiment." — Daniel R. Coleridge

MILE’S GOT LEGS

Eminem Soundtrack Continues Winning Ways

November 11, 2002

The 8 Mile soundtrack debuted at #1 last week—BEFORE the $54 million dollar opening-weekend box office. That said, with the film drawing from all demographics and Eminem mania reaching new heights, it looks like not even the Britney-less Justin Timberlake can dethrone the new king of the world.

If the numbers keep flowing like they are, Eminem will have the #1 film AND #1 album in the country. Of course, we might declare war on Iraq and send more than 250,000 soldiers to overthrow Saddam Hussein, so people may not care as much—but for now it’s really neat.

2 Justified--446,704

I was watching TRL last week and O-Town was on. Apparently, their new album comes o Tuesday. WTF?? This is the first I'm hearing this. Any-hoo, they played about 30 seconds of the video which looked boring (or maybe they're trying to be taken more seriously). But considering MTV played such a huge role in their "success," one would think they would have more support. Has MTV even played their video in it's entirety?? I'm guessing the network is peeved O-Town decided not to do another season of Making the Band. I don't know.

And they don't even look a like anymore. Jacob (who will now be referred to as "Jacob Marley") and Trevor look like they should be in one group. Ashley and Dan look like they belong in another group, and Erik?? I really don't know where he belongs.

What's with J-LO??? She's rumored to be engaged to Ben Affleck. Whether it's true or not, what is that girl's problem?? She goes from one man to the next. Actually she goes to next man before leaving the one before. My clinical senses are telling me somebody has insecurity issues and doesn't like to be alone. Hmmm... Anyway, I'm not feeling her song and the video. The lyrics are stupid. Which is a shame, because I usually like her music.

Also, Access Hollywood interviewed Christina on the red carpet of 8 Mile. The interviewer asked her about her family's reaction to the RS cover. He almost exact words were, "My grandmother was like, 'Shoooot, if I had a body like that I'd pose like that too.'" Okay why do I have the feeling her grandmother did <i>not</i> say <i>"Shoooot"</i>. LOL!!

Speaking of 8 Mile, I saw it last night. Good movie. I've been hearing talk about Eminem being nominated for an Oscar. Eminem was good, but he wasn't <i>that</i> good. Well, not Oscar-worthy anyway. The only problem I had with the movie was with the women. Other than the mother (Kim Basinger), they weren't really needed. I think Eminem told the writer, "I want to have sex in this movie," so they wrote in Brittany Murphy's character. And Taryn Manning?? Also served no purpose. They script could have worked without them. The best scenes involved "Jimmy's" friends. They were a riot!!

Anyway, the movie was worth the $8.00. I highly recommend it. I think it made over $50 million this weekend. <i>Da-yum!!!</i>

It's not what I would've imagined from him. I think he's proved himelf and I'm happy for him. Stripped I really really like, I like the positivity in all of the songs (minus those few that are all sexed up). She did good too, and maybe now she'll stop dressing like a 2 cent ho. The Eminem premiere was a step closer!

Alrighty, gotta jet, I have a competetion in Ft. Myers so I'll be gone the whole day. Take care y'all and mucho love =)

Subject: Christina Aguilera Follows Controversial 'Dirrty' With Inspirational 'Beautiful'

Author:
Shantelle
[Edit]

Date Posted: 11:55:11 11/07/02 Thu

When Christina Aguilera first came out of the gate to promote her long-awaited new album, she was wearing panties and chaps, dancing erotically with men and women, and singing about "getting me off."

Now, just a month after the "Dirrty" video premiered, the 21-year-old starlet is bundling up in coats, perching atop stools on the talk show circuit and crooning "Everywhere we go, the sun will always shine."

With the inspirational second single "Beautiful" being rushed to radio, one might speculate Aguilera and her record company are scrambling to do some image control.

Not true, according to Dave Gottlieb, RCA's head of marketing. The label has always planned on releasing that particular track and is doing so early because "Dirrty," as he put it, "Didn't perform as a homerun at radio."

Although Gottlieb said "Beautiful" was picked because it is the next best Aguilera song, it just so happens the song, built around the lyrics "I am beautiful no matter what they say/ Words can't bring me down," provides a perfect balance to the provocative "Dirrty."

"It gives Christina the chance to explain herself beyond a party song and video that caused a lot of discussion," Gottlieb said. "It lets her discuss the album more and it lets people in to how great an album it is and that it's not made up of 15 other songs just like 'Dirrty,' it's made up of 15 other songs of all different types."

After the "Dirrty" video, which turned out to be even more controversial than perhaps anyone expected, and the naked Rolling Stone cover and "below the belt" piercing revelation, it would be safe to say Christina shocked a few followers in her initial promotions for a record fittingly titled Stripped. "Beautiful," radio insiders believe, will put the raunch to rest ... at least temporarily.

"It's classic Christina," Jeff McCartney, a Top 40 specialist at radio trade magazine Hits, said of the new single, which is already playing on more than 50 stations although the official add date is not for another week. "It's a great song and she's very positive about it. It's a very positive message song, talking about how people should feel about themselves."

Michael Steele, program director at the Los Angeles area Top 40 station KIIS-FM, called "Beautiful" a career-solidifying song and suggested another reason why RCA is releasing it.

"The strategy is that [labels have] always gone with releasing a ballad around the holidays because ballads usually are the ones that sell records, and of course, they're trying to move as much product as they can," he said.

"Dirrty," which is not even in the upper half of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, is not promoting Stripped like a proper radio single should. The song's poor performance at radio is especially bewildering to some, since the video has been a huge hit.

"But videos and singles are two different things, as proven by [the most recent singles from] Backstreet Boys and 'NSYNC, which were #1 on 'TRL' but nowhere to be found on radio," McCartney explained. "Some songs just don't work on radio."

But just why "Dirrty" has tanked has the pop radio experts puzzled.

McCartney insinuated the audience the song attracted might have thrown off the testing. "Maybe there has been a backlash," he said. "With research, you're calling that 23-year-old female sitting at home on a Tuesday night, not out partying and taking her clothes off."

Ultimately, though, McCartney feels the risqué image is not to blame.

"Mandy Moore is the sweetest girl in the world and she can't sell anything," he said. "[Risqué] didn't work for Mariah [Carey], but she was so deep into her career by the time she changed, she really blew off her fanbase. There's a lot of girls who are as wild and crazy as Christina is. Look at how big 'Coyote Ugly' was."

Stripped was released on Tuesday (October 29).

Not at all what I expected from Justin. I thought this album would be more "hip hoppy;" instead, it's has a 70's/80's R&B vibe with a little jazz thrown in. There is definitely nothing “pop” about this record.

The songs are mid-tempo-not great for dancing but great for soaking in the tub surrounded by candles.

Other than Like I Love You, none of the songs really jump out at me. So far, my favs are Rock Your Body, Take it From Here (the ultimate baby making song) and Never Again. Senorita starts of pretty good but then gets stupid towards the end. What’s up with the audience participation segment??

I’ll give it a B for now.

The strangest thing happened to me today.

Trans Con has been advertising on monster.com for talent scouts, and so I thought, "Hell, I'll apply." Well, the link from monster takes you to a questionairre on their website where you fill out your name, your degree and you select from photos of models you would scout. Doesn't ask for a resume, which is weird to me. So, today I get an e-mail saying I have an interview?! I'm like...hmmm...this is a little too easy, but I'm so curious now! The interview process is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Thursday! I smell a rat, though. And I have to miss work to go to this thing--should I go?????????????

JC Chasez is recording solo material and he wants you to critique it.

The 'NSYNC star said on Friday that he's close to releasing some material on OnlyArtist.com, the new Web venture he was promoting on his T-shirt at the MTV Video Music Awards.

"I am releasing original material on there as an experiment, a writer's experiment," Chasez explained at a party to celebrate the release of Justin Timberlake's debut solo album. "What happens is I'll release a song or whatever, then I get feedback, and like ... it's an open forum for criticism on writing ideas and stuff."

Currently the site offers only a registration form, but a full launch is planned.

In the meantime, one of Chasez's songs, "Blowing Me Up (With Her Love)," will be released to radio in early December. The song will be included on the soundtrack to the upcoming movie "Drumline," due December 10.

Though Dallas Austin, producer of "Drumline" and its soundtrack, said he expected Chasez to release a solo album, JC said his Web site is his top priority. Second to Timberlake, Chasez has been the most hands-on member of 'NSYNC, co-writing material and standing out in concert.

Timberlake's Justified was released Tuesday.

JC, Joey & Dallas Austin world-premiered "Blowing Me Up" in the KIIS studio last night with JoJo. I hope we don't kill this poor girl's bandwith:

It's a rough copy (as you'll hear in the intro) and the song is quite different from 'NSYNC, but I still like it. *smiles with happiness*

Now that Justified is in stores, fans may be wondering whether Justin Timberlake will tour behind the record or go back to the studio.

And the answer is ... both.

Timberlake said Friday at the release party for Justified that he'll definitely hit the road, but his Jive Records spokesperson said it wouldn't be until late next summer.

When Timberlake returns to the studio in the meantime, it may or may not be with 'NSYNC. Asked if the group would release another album, he answered, "I think so. You know, you kind of have to follow the creativity wherever it goes."

Timberlake later implied that his creativity is heading in the way of collaborations. Although he wouldn't reveal any details, it has been confirmed that he'll be featured on Mariah Carey's new Charmbracelet.

"I'm working on some stuff right now, but I don't want to say too much about it, just in case," he said. "You know, sometimes legal stuff gets in the way of that. I've been working with a lot of people, though."

For the last few weeks, however, Timberlake has spent all his time promoting Justified, including a concert in New York on Tuesday night and his lavish release party, which featured go-go dancers and an ice sculpture of the "JT" logo on the CD.

"I have to thank the guys in 'NSYNC for that because if we wouldn't have sold those records, Jive wouldn't have had the money to make this party happen, so thanks, guys," Timberlake joked at the party.

Although you might expect him to be a little nervous about the album, especially going up against the "8 Mile" soundtrack, Timberlake said all he's feeling is confidence.

"I made the best possible album that I could make," he explained. "I'm happy with it. I'm not going to sit here and say it's the new sound and it's the whatever you wanna call it. It's just totally me and it's fun. I can make that promise. It is a fun record to listen to."

Justified's second single, "Cry Me a River," will be released later this month.

ONE-DAY SALES: TIMBERLAKE LOGS MAJOR SALES

NSYNC-er Swims Like Crazy; Initial Reaction to U2, ICP, DMB Also Looking Good

November 6, 2002

As the days grow shorter, the sales tallies grow longer. That’s the way it should be, and that’s how it’s shaping up this year as the holiday shopping season gets into full swing.
This week’s debut by Eminem’s 8 Mile soundtrack (Shady/Interscope) sets the #1 bar pretty darn high at 740k-plus, but one of yesterday’s new releases looks like it could cut Mr. Mathers’ reign short.

We’re talking, of course, about NSYSNC heartthrob Justin Timberlake’s highly anticipated solo bow, Justified (Jive), which in the early going looks likely to have a first week in the 550k-600k range, according to reports from national accounts. That puts him ahead of forecasts, and that’s a good thing.

Those with nose for retail suggest that Timberlake will likely find himself at #1 next week, if (and this is a big “if”) the Eminem experiences the typical second-week falloff. But given that the movie opens Friday, and 8 Mile is far from a typical soundtrack, its sales could actually increase over the next few days. If, as many believe, the movie does drive the soundtrack from the first week, Timberlake will have to settle for #2. But a half-million #2 is far from a bad thing.

WEEK IN PREVIEW: SLIM’S PHATTTTT

8 Mile, Nirvana, Aguilera Sell, as Shania, Nelly Heat Up Radio

November 4, 2002

It’s on, fool. Yep, the big guns of the fourth quarter are firing in earnest, as evidenced by Eminem’s 8 Mile soundtrack (Shady/Interscope), which has been kicking major booty at the cash registers. As of this moment, the year’s second major Eminem release (he already has the best-selling album of the year in The Eminem Show) appears headed for a first week of around 700k.

Also stirring up sales are the new Nirvana compilation (featuring "You Know You’re Right) on Geffen and Christina Aguilera’s image-shifting Stripped (RCA). The kings of grunge look likely to make 250k for the week, while the Aguilera, which is still trending up, has a shot at hitting 350k.

Justin Timberlake, 'NSync's main man and newfound solo artist, got one thing right: The world is a bit over bubblegum pop.

"I don't think people want to hear [bubblegum pop] so much anymore. I know I don't," Timberlake admitted during an interview late last week. This would explain why –- for those who don't know -– Timberlake's debut solo album, Justified, falls more under the smooth, R&B -– old-school style -- category than pure pop.

Even with his forward-thinking musical direction, Timberlake says that 'NSync will be making another record and he will be part of it. "I would do it in a heartbeat," he said.

'NSync aside, Timberlake says he will tour behind Justified (due Nov. 5 on Jive), though no firm plans are in place yet. The second single, "Cry Me a River," which was co-written by Timberlake, Timbaland, and Scott Storch, will hit radio Nov. 11 and video outlets Nov. 25.

And, on the artist's wish list these days are collaborations with Coldplay's singer Chris Martin or Lenny Kravitz. For more from Timberlake, check out the CDNOW Interview on Nov. 6.

Nov. 7, BET, 106 & Park

Those who've watched Christina Aguilera prance about in her revealing video for "Dirrty" might be shocked at the pop singer's new look, but she says she's just being herself and won't apologize for it.

Still, she begins her new album, Stripped (November 5), with an apology. "Sorry you can't define me/ Sorry I break the mold/ Sorry that I speak my mind/ Sorry don't do what I'm told," she sings on "Stripped Part 1."

While she may not really be breaking the musical mold, Aguilera is dead set on breaking away from teen pop, and she stretches the genre's boundaries throughout Stripped, a highly personal proclamation of independence and adulthood.

"I feel like it is a new beginning," Aguilera said, "a re-introduction of myself as a new artist in a way, because for the first time people are really seeing and getting to know how I really am."

Some feel her "Dirrty" single and video are almost too adult, pushing her sexual self to the forefront to emphasize she's come of age, but Stripped contains other indications of Aguilera's maturity that are more restrained. With writing and production help from Alicia Keys, Scott Storch, Glen Ballard and Linda Perry, Aguilera crafted songs that range from surf rock to neo soul, all in a quest to express and explore the awkward task of growing up.

"I got a chance to show of all these colors and textures of my love of music and of my vocal range," she said. "Coming off of the height of being a part of such a big pop-craze phenomenon, that imagery of that cookie-cutter sweetheart, without it being me, I just had to take it all down and get it away from me. And that is why I actually named the album Stripped, because it is about being emotionally stripped down and pretty bare to open my soul and heart."

"Dirrty" and "Get Mine, Get Yours" make no bones about celebrating one's libido, but Stripped is by no means just a party record. "Can't Hold Us Down," featuring Lil' Kim, is a hip-pop feminist anthem about sexual hypocrisy and double standards, a subject that hits closer to home now that she's been taken to task for her in-your-face sexualized and fetishized imagery. "Can't Hold Us Down" also can be read as an answer to past detractors such as Fred Durst and Eminem, though she said to do so would be "misconstruing the point."

"This is directed to any male who puts down a female for stating her mind," she said. "This is definitely to make women feel empowered to do and say what they want to."

Other songs, such as the sensual Latin jazz number "Infatuation" and the funkier "Underappreciated," are more specific, tracing steps in her relationship with ex-boyfriend Jorge Santos, one of the dancers in her live shows and videos. The lyrics to "Infatuation" find her falling in love, and in "Underappreciated," out of it.

Equally personal is the guitar ballad "I'm OK," her take on her father's abusive behavior before her parents separated. "It is such a hush-hush topic because it happens in the home," Aguilera said. "I definitely wrote that song not to badmouth him at all, but one, for a healing process for myself, and two, to give people hope or a voice to relate to. To know that you can get through it and that it will be OK."

That wasn't easy for her to discover, she said, but her Stripped sessions with Perry helped her unload a lot of frustration once she also learned to relieve stress by screaming and to accept and even embrace her mistakes.

"She taught me that imperfections are good and should be kept because it comes from the heart," Aguilera said. "It makes things more believable and it's brave to share them with the world." Even if that world still operates by double standards.

Jam Master Jay, Run-DMC DJ, Killed In Shooting
10.30.2002 10:48 PM EST

NEW YORK — Legendary hip-hop DJ Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC was shot and killed in Queens on Wednesday (October 30), according to police.

Authorities confirmed that Jay, born Jason Mizell, was fatally shot inside a studio on Merrick Boulevard at 7:30 p.m. local time. Another victim, Urieco Rincon, was shot in the leg. Rincon, 25, is listed in stable condition at an area hospital.

Mizell, 37, is survived by his wife, three sons, mother, brother and sister.

Around 9 p.m., during a concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan, fellow hip-hop icon Big Daddy Kane informed spectators that he just had gotten word that "something happened" to Jay, though he did not know at the time if it was true. He then went on to pay homage to deceased rap greats Tupac Shakur, Freaky Tah, Notorious B.I.G., Big Punisher and Big L.

A few blocks away, at the opening of Russell Simmons' "Def Poetry Jam," the media mogul was visibly distraught.

"We'll never have a band," Simmons' brother, Run, said in a 1988 interview before pointing to Jay, his one-man sound machine. "That's our band."

"Such a good person," Funkmaster Flex said of Jay on his radio show Wednesday night. "Sometimes when we talk about people passing away, sometimes you forget to say you miss a good person. ... For us who knew Jay and other artists who knew Jay, [he] may be one of the few people who embraced things that are new, from artists to DJs. He's one of the people from the early '80s who has a relationship with a lot of artists [from the old school and new school]."

"If you love this hip-hop thing like I love this hip-hop thing, it's a sad day," Big Daddy Kane's longtime DJ, Mr. Cee, urged as he fought back tears throughout Flex's show. "This has to stop, not just in hip-hop, but all over. This violence is just crazy. It's unreal."

"Hip-hop has to take a moment to recognize that we lost one of the gurus of the game," wrote Farai, 22, of Indianapolis to MTV News' You Tell Us forum.

"I just loved the fact that while he was dropping the craziest hardcore heart poundin' beats, that classic smile never left his face," wrote Matt, 32, from Boston. "God bless you, Jay."

For close to 20 years, Jam Master Jay, Run (Joseph Simmons) and DMC (Darryl McDaniels) have been touching the lives of multitudes of fans who include their peers and associates in the music industry. Their brash b-boy style introduced hip-hop to the MTV audience with classic clips such as "Rock Box," "King of Rock" and "Walk This Way," which also resuscitated Aerosmith's careers.

"That's Run-DMC's mission," DMC said in a 1988 interview. "Let everyone know this is music. It's the most exciting form, the most educational, the most vivid and visual."

It wasn't just the swinging gold chains, the Adidas sneakers or the black jogging and leather suits. Fans fell in love with Run's sheer audacity and charisma, DMC's depth and strength and the Jam Master's skills. His scratching and mixing exhibitions on songs such as "Jam Master Jay," "Sucker MCs" and "Peter Piper" (which Missy Elliott uses a portion of on her latest single, "Work It") were as influential on future turntablists as Run and DMC's raps were on the MCs who followed in their footsteps.

"Run-DMC's 'Rock Box' — that record, right there, slammed the whole industry," KRS-One said in the late '80s.

"Run-DMC definitely made me feel rap was here to stay," Big Daddy Kane concurred of his peers' pioneering.

More recently, Ice Cube praised the trio. "They're the Rolling Stones of the rap game," he said. "They're pioneers. Run-DMC made rap emerge out of hip-hop to be the signature art."

"They took hip-hop to a level that I don't think nobody's ever taken it to to this day," Eminem marveled of their spot in the hip-hop annals. "[Nobody] ever could take it further than they took it."

Jay, Run and DMC, who were immortalized on Hollywood's Rock Walk earlier this year, also served as reference points for any hip-hop stars thinking of making a move to the big screen. They starred in the cult classic "Krush Groove" in 1985 and the blueprint 'hood flick "Tougher Than Leather" in 1988.

Outside of the group, Jay always had his ear to the street, signing Onyx to his JMJ Records imprint and helping to produce their multi-platinum debut, 1993's Bacdaf--up. Years later, Jay wouldn't have to travel out of his native borough of Queens to discover another act who would go on to set the streets ablaze — 50 Cent spent time under Jay's wing, at one point recording 36 songs in 18 days, before eventually making the move to the Trackmasters' camp and subsequently landing in the Shady/Aftermath Records fold.

Run-DMC recently wrapped a tour with Kid Rock and Aerosmith and were scheduled to perform Thursday (October 31) as part of the half-time festivities at a Washington Wizards home game.

Aside from the Kid Rock/Aerosmith tour, Run-DMC were keeping visible with a handful of TV appearances, including August's 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. According to DMC, the trio were planning to return to the studio and work on their eighth album, the first since last year's Crown Royal. The release of the LP and its supporting tour would've coincided with their 20th anniversary.

Viewers beware..

This is the new cover for Rolling Stone.. So think really long and hard if you want to see this.. Unfourtunitly this will be laying on my garage floor in about a week or so when it comes in the mail..

I am not quite sure what statment she is trying to make here.. She doesn't really need to make a statement quite like this one, I guess she is kind of following in the footsteps of Madonna.. And all I can say is I hope she doesn't regret some of the "statements" she is trying to make.. Even Madonna has regrets about things she did early in her career..

I think I've seen Playboy covers that involve more covering up than this.. Christina is a big girl, she can do what she wants, blah, blah, blah.. And I'm not a fan of her for her actions, I'm a fan because I enjoy the music, and her voice.. But.. I can't even defend this..

The media backlash that is going to come with this.. Maybe she was wearing something other than what she is.. And the airbrushed out the clothes.. It's possible.. But probably not.. And maybe the article is just so good, and amazingly insightful, that the cover won't even matter..

*Sigh*

Grad Tidings

Can Christina, Justin and the blond BSB guy finally say bye, bye, bye to teen pop? by David Browne

Like the Dotcom gold rush with which it coincided, the teen pop scene was all about giddy, ostentatious thrills. And like those once-flourishing companies, the music is now an artifact of the '90s, a tarnished reminder of another, distant era. Nowhere is that grave new world mood more apparent than in the first batch of post teen explosion records- solo discs from members of the on hiatus *NSYNC (Justin Timberlake) and BSB (Nick Carter), and Christina Aguilera's first album of all new, English speaking pop since her 1999 debut. The overall message: We've had our moments. Where are we going now? Anywhere but Disneyland.

Aguilera's video for her new single "Dirrty," which represents her as the world's skeeziest reptile woman, was her first declaration of independence from the teen pop ties that supposedly bound her. That theme runs throughout Stripped. "Sorry I break the mold/ Sorry that I speak my mind," she announces, with startling sourness, in a brief intro. Nearly every second of this overlong, 20 track workshop communicates the overwhelming struggles she endured-while trying to become a superstar by age 18.

Hardly the stuff of sympathetic drama, but it's the least of Stripped difficulties. Clearly afflicted with Premature Serious Artist Syndrome, last seen in Hanson, Aguilera wants to demonstrate the range of her interests. Accordingly, Stripped dabbles in vampy soul, quasimetal, piano bar intimacy, quiet storm R&B, bounce-bounce hip hop, and semi exotic rock, all of it dutifully accomplished. The album has moments: The ballad "Beautiful" is more restrained and the metal strut "Fighter" spunkier than one would expect from a dance floor strumpet who loves to flaunt her lung power. But as her delivery flits from smoky soulful diva inspirational, she exhibits plenty of elastic skill but little joy. For all her newfound freedom, Aguilera still sounds unhappy, not to mention unfocused.

No such torment, at least on the surface, for Justin Timberlake. On Justified (out Nov 5), he swaps Europop for R&B and hip-hop. His smooth falsetto is an easy fit for the slinky quirks and rhythmic accents of the Neptunes and Timbaland, who produced the bulk of the album. Thanks to them, Justified is a cohesive and fairly lean work, especially compared with Stripped or *NSYNC's last two albums. Fellow singer dancer and ex Britney Spears is never mentioned by name, the songs appear to be divided between those about it's aftermath. In the former category, Timberlake gets downright maudlin and snippy, making the case in the drippy " Never Again" that he was wronged. In the later category, he's more engaging- the stud on the loose, making promises of romance and more in the slurpy cuts like "Senorita" and "Rock your body" ("I could think of a couple positions for you," he boasts in "Right for me," whose loosey goosey, barrio street corner groove is surprisingly experimental.)

Homages to Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder abound; in some way, Justified is the ultramodern R&B pop hybrid Invincible failed to be. But these strengths also pinpoint the project's principal weakness. Whether it's because Timberlake has a suave but indistinct voice or because his producers overpower him, the album is strangely anonymous. Only once does the singer grab the reins, and it's quite a moment. Part electro shuffle and part symphonic sulk, the Timbaland production "Cry me a River" is a haunted, pained farewell, a genuine stunner that should leave Timberlake's fellow *NSYNCers concerned that he truly may not need them anymore.

Compared with Aguilera and Timberlake, Nick Carter is a classicist. None of their lofty ambitions for him, on Now or Never, Carter brings new meaning to the phrase "kicking it old school" by keeping the boyband sound alive, albeit with heavier guitars and a wholesale embrace of hair metal choruses. Carter just wants simple sugar pop kicks, and he gets them in the creamy "My Confession" and "Help Me". It's fluff and he knows it, and he scores points for lack of pretension. Alas, he's docked for "Girls in the USA" a grating Def Leppard meets dancehall mess in which Carter brags about how he has "a little thing in the Denver hills/A real fine mama with sex appeal." (And that's just one city.) And like Timberlake and Aguilera, Carter seems compelled to sit down next to a piano and ooze the most generic melody he's handed. Still, Carter's determined to have fun even as his world crumbles around him- which, in some twisted way, proves that at least one teen pop veteran remains in synch with our times.

Produced by Atlanta's producer Dallas Austin, I Want A Girl Like You will ship to Urban and Rhythm Crossover radio on October 28. The add date at both formats is November 18. Erik White will direct the video on November 8 and 9 in Los Angeles. The clip will impact on November 18.

<b>On that same day, Jive will release the highly anticipated first solo recording and second soundtrack single by JC Chasez of *NSYNC. Blowing Me Up (With Her Love) will ship to Pop, Urban and Rhythm Crossover radio. The impact date at all formats is December 9. </b>

Grammy(R) Award winning producer-songwriter Dallas Austin serves as executive producer of the movie while doubling as the film's executive music producer. The all-star soundtrack will also feature tracks by Lil' Mo and Nivea, Trick Daddy, N.E.R.D.S., Sunshine Anderson, Alicia Keys, Nappy Roots, Petey Pablo, Monica, and the star of the movie Nick Cannon, who is also a Nick/Jive Records recording artist.

Drumline, the movie, is distributed by Fox and will open in theaters nationwide on January 10, 2003. The idea of the movie came from Dallas Austin's personal experience as a high school student and drumliner in Atlanta. Drumline is the story of Devon Miles, a young, gifted hip hip-hop drummer from Harlem who decides to move to Atlanta to study at a local college with the hopes of gaining a spot on as a drummer on the school's renowned marching band's drumline. The movie offers a unique look at the world and culture of show-style marching bands at America's black universities.
Nickelodeon's Nick Cannon plays the lead role (Devon Miles) in the flick; Jive recording artist Petey Pablo's performance is also featured in the movie.

The Drumline soundtrack album will march into music retailers on December 10, 2002.

<i>JC calls into JoJo's radio show (KiisFm-LA)

He called from the studio..they're actually still working on blowing me up........(Dallas was with him)it will hit radio at the end of Nov. He said the movie Drumline is a great film. JoJo asked about the Solo project. He is writing and getting music together right now. He talked about Only Artist.com........it is basically a open forum, where music (including his) will be posted for free, and people will be able to discuss as well as critique what they hear........he said it's a perfect way for him to keep in touch with fans while Nsync is on a hiatus. October 24, 2002 - More excerpts from Christina Aguilera's cover story in the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone magazine are shared in the New York Post. The singer may have alienate one of her largest fan bases when she commented on fellow singer Jennifer Love Hewitt, "She wants a bunch of white boys I don't want... I would scare the sh** out of her if she came to one of my sleepovers." She did try to backtrack a bit from the remark adding, "I don't discriminate because of color. I actually dated my first [white] one recently." Both singers have been linked to Carson Daly and Enrique Iglesias.

October 24, 2002 - A portion of Rolling Stone's feature on Christina Aguilera has been posted on their website, including photos that appeared in the magazine. The mag follows Aguilera as she auditions dancers for 'Dirrty', including her ex-boyfriend Jorge Santos, who happened to make the cut. As for another, her manager 's daugher Allison Azoff suggests, "I thought that white girl was a good freestyler." Christina responded, "Yeah, I guess we have to have one white person, right?" Aguilera also talked about another ex-boyfriend since Santos, whom she refers to as "@#%$", whom many suggest is the white guy she went out with, actor Tobey Maguire.

In just three years, Christina Aguilera has transformed her music and herself from a teen genie in a bottle into a sexy and sassy starlet. We find out why?

If you compare yourself to the person three years ago, how have you changed?

First and foremost, like any 17 year-old through those years to 21, I think I’ve learned so much. I’ve been through a lot of things, I’ve had my share of ups and downs, and learned a lot about people - especially from the back-stabbing situations that come with being in this business! I’ve also had some sad times, like the break-up with my first serious boyfriend. So, I think I’ve grown up a lot because of going through everything I’ve experienced, good and bad. But it’s made me that much stronger, and that’s really reflected in the record too.

Why has it been so long between albums?

Having been working so much for the first album, I just wanted to have a little bit of a break, to disappear for a little bit and take my time with this record and recording it. The break-up with my boyfriend also partly delayed the record a little bit longer than I wanted.

How does it feel to be back on the road launching a new album?

It feels amazing because I’m not much of a studio-lover; I get bored with it really fast. I love performing live, I love being on stage and feeling the energy of an audience so it’s great to be back. Also, being a little wiser and me really doing my own record this time, I’m so happy to promote it and to be back out here, doing it. I’m excited, I’m very excited! Oh my God, you don’t even know! I can’t wait to perform, it should be a blast!

There's one hour of my like I'll never get back.

I felt like I was watching the Anna Nicole Show (yes, I admit it, I watch that God-awful show, but I digress). Christina's Diary was boring.

<i>Watch me take my clothes off, watch me record a song with Alicia-no one will remember my name in a year-Keys, watch me strip some more, uh, watch me play with my little brother in the shortest skirt I can find, watch me just happen to drive by my old house and stop by for a visit, watch me talk about how hard life is as I count my millions.</i>

And does this girl have friends? It seemed like the people around her either works for her or is related to her. Yep, definitely the Anna Nicole Show.

I couldn't watch the other special that was on with her in NY. I had enough fakeness for one night.

Sorry, Becky.

Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs weighed in on *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake on MTV's Total Request Live on Tuesday. Diddy says Timberlake is "smooth", "beautiful", and "Elvis." Diddy thinks Justin is this generation's Elvis. Just imagine his praise had Diddy's track not got left on the 'Justified' cutting room floor.

It’s official. Puffy has signed New Edition to a multi-million dollar contract on his Bad Boy Entertainment label. The line up will feature Ralph Tresvant, Johnnie Gill, Ronald Devoe, Ricky Bell, and Mike Bivins….no Bobby Brown. Puffy was one of the producers for their last album Home Again which was released in 1996. The group will release a 20th anniversary album next year.

BTW, is anyone planning on watching Making the Band II? I have to admit I'm curious to see what Puffy will put together. I don't care all that much for him, but I <i>do</i> think he's a good producer.

'Yours' Truly

Mariah and Justin record a duet. The song ''Yours,'' featuring the newly solo 'N Sync singer, is one of several duets Carey is considering including on her album, due in December by Gary Susman

Justin Timberlake is everywhere these days. The 'N Sync singer is popping up at radio stations from California to London to promote ''Justified,'' his solo CD debut due next month. But he's also showing up alongside Mariah Carey on a duet called ''Yours,'' which she may include on her still-untitled December release. The song marks one of several high-profile guest appearances on potential tracks for the album, including cameos by rappers Jay-Z and Cam'ron.

Apparently, the duet is romantic enough that both Timberlake and Carey have had to deny that they're making beautiful music together outside the studio as well, MSNBC.com reports. (Also, just for the record, Christina Aguilera has also denied that she and Britney's ex are more than friends.)

In fact, Timberlake and Carey weren't even in the studio at the same time to record ''Yours.'' Launch.com reports that producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis recorded Mariah's part first and Justin's at a later session. Jam tells MTV, ''If I were to compare it to something we have done with her in the past, it would be 'Thank God I Found You,' but I think 'Yours' blows it away. It is probably one of the best hooks [ever]. I have a 6-year-old, and the first time he heard it, the third time the hook came around, he already knew it.'' Carey is mulling over whether to include the pre-Justin version or the duet on her album, MTV reports.

Carey and Timberlake will appear on the same stage this weekend, along with such performers as Ja Rule, India.Arie, Jill Scott, Eric Clapton, and Elton John, for the taping of BET's tribute to Stevie Wonder, which airs Oct. 29.

I don't know if it will be on the album or not, but it's called "I Will Be" and it's a very Gospel like piano ballad.

I think this is the song she talked about a couple years ago when she was on the cover of Rolling Stone..

I like it, her voice is very strong throughout the song. It was written with Heather Holly who wrote the song "Obvious" for Chrirstina's first album..

Sarah Michelle Gellar to become Christina for SNL skit It's a blonde ambition takeover on SNL as Sarah Michelle Gellar and Faith Hill go live on Saturday night. On TV viewers know Sarah Michelle as a vampire slayer, but after the Oct. 12 episode of Saturday Night Live, she'll also be a 'pop star slayer.' She's planning on a little tribute to Christina Aguilera. It's not exactly "what a girl wants," but Sarah will get "dirty." When asked how the Aguilera skit came about, Sarah joked: "Well, have you seen the video.”" But will Sarah Michelle be donning the Christina panties and chaps for the spoof? "I'm going to do some form of them. I'm hoping they are going to build something so that it looks like me, but isn't me. I'm hoping they are going to build one of those superman costumes where it looks like the butt is in there, but it's not real."

'NSYNC's JC Chasez Records Solo Tracks, Considers Album
10.10.2002 4:34 PM EDT

Justin Timberlake is not the only 'NSYNCer releasing solo material this year.

JC Chasez will have at least one song on the soundtrack for the upcoming movie "Drumline" and appears to be well into his own album.

Dallas Austin, who's producing the film and the soundtrack, has recorded four songs with Chasez, including "Blowin' Me Up," a strong contender to be the soundtrack's first single.

"We've been doing some great, great material," Austin said Wednesday from his Atlanta home. "At first he wasn't going to do a record, but I think now he's kind of interested, so we'll probably just keep recording. We were just writing songs for the movie and we caught a niche and it was like, 'Oh sh--, this is cool for you, let's keep going.' "

So far Chasez and Austin have recorded fun, fast-paced songs and mid-tempo ballads.

"It's back to George Michael and Prince and that '80s era, where even though you had up-tempos, they still had songs to them, they had a lot of attitude," Austin explained. "It was a trip because we didn't realize how far away music had gotten from doing real songs until we started working on this stuff."

The soundtrack — due December 10, according to Jive Records — will also include Alicia Keys, Monica, Petey Pablo and Jive newcomer Nivea, who was featured on Mystikal's "Danger (Been So Long)."

A collaboration between Joe and Jadakiss called "A Girl Like You" and the first teaming of fellow Atlanta producers Austin and Jermaine Dupri, "Been Away," were recorded for the album as well.

"Drumline" is based on Austin's experiences in his high school marching band and is due in theaters January 10. Nick Cannon (Nickelodeon's "The Nick Cannon Show"), Zoe Saldana ("Crossroads") and Orlando Jones ("The Replacements") star in the movie.

Second to Timberlake, Chasez has been the most hands-on member of 'NSYNC, co-writing material and standing out in concert (see "'NSYNC Tour Opener: It's The Justin And JC Show!").

Timberlake's Justified is due November 5 (see "Timberlake, Janet Jackson Make Sexy Pair On Justified").

New Edition In Talks To Sign With Bad Boy
10.09.2002 5:22 PM EDT

If P. Diddy's going to make a
new addition to his Bad Boy
family, why not choose New
Edition?

A source at Bad Boy and
sources close to the legendary
group, which includes Michael
Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Ralph
Tresvant, Johnny Gill and Ricky
Bell, say the guys have been in
talks to sign with Puff.

While nothing is finalized yet, a
few weeks ago, fresh off a stint
on the New Edition tour (see
"New Edition Warm Up For
Anniversary With Family
Reunion"), Johnny Gill said that
P.D. will in fact be contributing
tracks to the group's 20th
anniversary LP, which is slated
for release next year.

"We're going to be working with
Puffy on the album," Gill
revealed. "He's helping get the
album together. He just came out to several of the shows. He's
such a big fan. I looked around and saw him at a few shows. He
said, 'I saw you guys and, excuse my expression, but y'all got
me acting like a bitch. I'm here to take notes.' "

—Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Corey Moss

<i>Not sure how good an idea that is. Hasn't Puffy screwed over some of his Bad Boy acts? Plus won't he be concentration on Making the Band II?</i>

against *N SYNC,but NE has more stage showmanship
than them.Ralph Tresvant,Johnny Gill,Ricky Bell,
Mike Bivins, and Ronnie Devoe can sing and dance
circles around Justin Timberlake,Chris Kirpatrick,Joey Fatone Jr.,Lance Bass,and J.C.
Chasez, and they don't a huge elaborate show like
*N SYNC to stand out,all they need is big stage,
a band,five microphones w/angle-tipped mike
staffs and NE can put on a "hott" show w/o having
to stand out.Remember,NE was here before *N SYNC
and they'll still be here after them too.

Christina Aguilera has been raising a lot of eyebrows lately. Has the genie-turned-dirrty girl "jumped the shark"?

Yes 74%

No 26%

If so, when did she take the leap?

When she released the Spanish-language LP Mi Reflejo 6%

When she wore next to nothing at the MTV Video Music Awards 30%

When she adopted "street speak" 34%

When she released the video for "Dirrty" 18%

At some other time 12%

Boy wonder

Star of the world's biggest boy band, Justin Timberlake is poised to go global on his own. Polly Vernon meets the man they're calling the new Michael Jackson

Sunday October 6, 2002
The Observer

In a violently air-conditioned recording studio in the basement of an anonymous LA hotel, self-styled R'n'B impresario Silas White is introducing the first public playback of an album called Justified . The record is the inaugural solo outing for goldie-bronzed boy-band fave Justin Timberlake. Mini-bar miniatures are flowing, fragrant candles are flickering on every flat surface in the interest, presumably, of ambience, and a bunch of journalists and record industry extras are waiting, semi-expectantly. Silas is spouting evangelical hyperbole.
'This kid,' says Silas, with absolute reverence and no detectable sense of self-irony, 'is one of those special artists who comes along every so often and changes everything. This kid will be one of the greats. This album...' He shakes his head slowly at the magnificence of it all.

You'd give a lot for Silas to be wrong, because he's irritating and desperately earnest and a little smug. And anyway, historically boy-band refugees do not produce good solo albums. Consider Gary Barlow, Ronan Keating, Robbie Williams's nondescript early attempts.

But Silas is right about Justin Timberlake, and right about Justified. Inventive and instant, grindingly raw and sexy, it's a truly great record. It's intensely R'n'B and hip-hop influenced, yet it doesn't sound like anything else. Except maybe Prince when he was very good, or Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life, or Michael Jackson's Off The Wall. Timberlake's voice is honey-dipped and sweet and achingly right, and every song is produced by one of a long list of extraordinarily cachet people - Timbaland, The Neptunes, Bubba Sparx and P Diddy. Ten tracks in, Silas victoriously turns to confront the assembled crowd. 'See?' he asks. And everybody does.
