Yuri Ebihara, known as Ebi-chan almost universally throughout the Japanese media in which she’s a ubiquitous presence, has been going through a patch of rough luck, according to Shukan Gendai (11/4).
The 27-year-old model was caught in the magnitude 6.6 earthquake that shook Hawaii on Oct. 16.
“Ebi-chan was in Waikiki with her great rival, Moe Oshikiri, and other models to do a photo shot for the fashion magazine, CanCam. They were with the magazine’s managing editor, a TV film crew and some local workers for the shoot,” a TV industry insider tells Shukan Gendai. “They were caught 20 floors up in the elevator at their hotel when the quake struck. Ebi-chan had to take the stairs all the way to the bottom of the building. Once she got out there, she had to line up with a huge crowd outside a convenience store for over an hour before she could buy enough water for her stay. Things just went from bad to worse for her.”
It wasn’t the latest batch of misfortune for the woman quickly making a fortune plugging everything from dresses to McDonalds shrimp hamburgers named after her. Earlier this month, she had a very public struggle with a bout of conjunctivitis.

“Ebi-chan said at her Oct. 6 birthday party that the conjunctivitis had healed, but at one stage there her eye was all dressed up with so many ointments that it looked as though she was being treated for burns. It really looked painful. She’d only just gotten better and headed back to work when she was caught up in the Hawaiian earthquake,” a stylist says.

Fellow model Yu Yamada is being blamed for the case of conjunctivitis Ebi-chan picked up. There were fears that it would spread through Japan’s catwalk world, but there was only one other model to get hit by the eye disease — Oshikiri, Ebi-chan’s fierce rival and the main model of ViVi magazine — the direct competitor of Ebi-chan’s CanCam.
Oshikiri was also on the ill-fated Hawaiian trip with Ebi-chan. And Ebi-chan’s rival can also lay claim to plenty of misfortune in the Island State.
“She was there on a photo shoot a few years ago and got wiped out by a huge wave that left her with a chipped tooth,” the TV insider tells Shukan Gendai. “She had to take quite a bit of time off work, too.” (By Ryann Connell)
