ESPN.com Research Notes
The Lakers are making their fifth Finals appearance this decade. Amazingly, that's not even in the top two for Lakers' Finals appearances by decade. They made eight appearances in the '80s (missing only in '81 and '86) and six appearances in the '60s (losing all six).
Kobe Bryant is the fifth reigning MVP since 1998 to advance to the NBA Finals. After an MVP reaches the Finals, his team almost automatically wins. Only Allen Iverson has been on the losing end of the Finals in the past 10 years.
The Celtics swept the season series 2-0 against the Lakers, winning by an average of 16 points. The Lakers did not have Pau Gasol for either matchup during the season.
The Lakers and Celtics have met in the Finals 10 times. The Celtics have dominated the matchup, winning eight out of the 10 series.
