Protest against NYTimes’ article “Ugly Images of Asian Rivals Become Best Sellers in Japan (Nov, 19, 2005)”
Mr. Onishi’s article of November 19 on best seller comics in Japan merely repeats the Chinese and South Korean anti-Japanese claims. It lacks an American sense of justice, which should be most demanded for the neutral position that a majority of Americans seek to hold. His article definitely reads as if he desires the re-emergence of the pre-war American attitude—treating China with favor and Japan with neglect—an attitude that eventually ruined U.S.-Japanese relationships. The Japanese media doubt the credibility of Mr. Onishi’s recent articles on Japan and scrutinize them with grave concern. For example, despite his interview with me, his description on the Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform such as 'the nationalist organization that has pushed to have references to the country's wartime atrocities eliminated from junior high school text books' only reflects his stereotyped prejudice and is contrary to the facts. Contrary to Mr. Onishi’s criticism, our textbook does not insist on the supremacy of Japanese culture, but the uniqueness of Japanese history. Moreover, it offers objective explanations regarding the fundamental differences between Japan and Germany in WWII, and the partial responsibility of the United States, United Kingdom, and especially pre-modern China who could not control herself sufficiently—for the Pacific War. 11月19日付けの中韓批判の漫画、Best Sellers in Japan に関するONISHI記者の記事は、中韓の悪意にみちた反日の主張そのままで、中立の立場に立つべきアメリカ人の客観的公平さにかけ、戦前のアメリカの、中国への偏愛におぼれ、日本を不当に孤立させた外交の失敗をあたかも再度望むかのごとき危険性にみちている。最近の同記者の偏向報道は目に余るものがあると日本のメデイアでは疑問視し、憂慮されている。私は同記者とインタビューしたが、私の属するthe Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform を彼は the nationalist organization that has pushed to have references to the country’s wartime atrocities eliminated from junior high school textbooks.
