Oledong preparing for November title defence

KITTIPONG THONGSOMBAT

WBC champ Oledong Sithsamerchai.

WBC strawweight champion Oledong Sithsamerchai will defend his title in Phitsanulok on November 27, according to manager Piyarat Wachirarattawongse.

No opponent has been finalised for the 23-year-old stylist, who won the belt from compatriot Den Junlaphan last November.

This will be his second defence and the fight will be sponsored mainly by Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc (CPF).

The Trang native made a first brilliant defence of his 105lb belt when he stopped Japan's Junichi Ebisuoka in the ninth round in Phuket in June.

After the fight, it was claimed that he was ready to box abroad, especially in Japan.

However, a source close to Oledong's camp said that they were now more cautious about travelling to Japan because of a recent series of controversial defeats for Thai boxers in the country.

Oledong, who is Thailand's only male world champion, takes part in a warm-up match tomorrow at a makeshift ring in Minburi district, Bangkok.

"From this warm-up, we will know how good he is at the moment and what kind of boxer is suitable for him in his defence," his promoter said.

"There are a lot Mexican boxers who are interested in fighting Oledong but we have to wait and see."

At the top of the bill in Minburi, WBC youth light-flyweight champion Noknoi Sithiprasert will defend his belt for the 10th time.

The Krabi-born Noknoi, 21, will be up against Indonesia's Argus Merrang.

Former WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Kratingdaenggym also fights Mohamad Akbar of Iran on the undercard.
