Windows 7 said to hit milestone

Although a public test version of Windows 7 is still at least a month away, Microsoft has hit a key internal milestone, according to several Windows enthusiast sites.

Several sites are reporting that Microsoft has hit the M3 (Milestone 3) stage, with the builds being distributed internally within Microsoft, as well as to some key partners. A Microsoft representative declined to comment beyond what has been said on the company's Engineering Windows 7 blog.

ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley said that she has taken a peek at the new build, thanks to a source of hers. Foley said that it appears to be fairly stable, at least in her short time with the software, and also noted that it didn't appear to be a major departure from Windows Vista.

She noted that the internal Paint and WordPad programs have a user interface similar to the "ribbon" approach used by Office 2007.

On his UX Evangelist site, Stephen Chapman posted what appears to be a screenshot of the new Paint program.

As for what this all means, Foley said that this may be the last key internal milestone before some sort of public preview version, possibly in time for the Professional Developers Conference set for late October. A full beta 1 version might be ready by year's end, she said.

The real speculation game has centered around when a final version of 7 will ship. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said he wants the release out by late 2009, although the latest hot rumor is that the company may be aiming for a release as early as June 2009.

Show me don't tell me. Vista was supposed to be the "wunder OS", and it sucked.

How long does it take to redress A pig and put lipstick on it. What is it greased? Microsoft is its biggest compitition. They should split the company into 2 parts now XP and Vista.. or Sahara.. or Windows 7.. or well whatever they end up calling it. If they did that maybe it would force them to actually test an O/S before selling it. Compitition does make for better product. Course now that Bill Gates "retired" to do comertials with Seinfield, maybe Jerry can come up with a good O/S. Couldn't be worse than Windows Vista.. Could it.. Could it? By the way I am from the mile high city and we still call Mile high staduim Mile High. Even though some company would rather have their name on it. It relates to Vista.. which I will always call Vista.

End of line.

Real mature, goodspeed8701.

Windows 7 has a chance to make Microsoft look better. If it doesn't feel much different from Vista, it will probably miss that chance. It needs to have improved performance and fewer DRM related headaches, kinda like XP. Being pre-beta, though, I guess for now we will just have to wait and see.

Ah, ok, I am a fan of Windows, but this is rediculous, especially Stephens over enthusiasm for a Office Fluentesq Word Pad and an updated UI for a Paint program that is probably only used once in a while. Get back to me Microsoft when you have something real to buy. Right now, Mac OS X and a MacBook Pro are at the top of the list.

How can a company with the assets/ resouces blow it so often? Make a simple straight foreward STABLE os/cross compatible with mac and all the others out there and save the bells and whistles for the technoids who dig that stuff. Test the holy hell out of the thing, put it in the car with the crash test dummy, and test and test. Fancy Graphics are good for gamers. so have a gamer edition. I;m a musician, have a Multimedia optimized edition etc. etc.
About lipstick and pigs, who Gives a rats posterior ejection tube. This election is a ppredetermined given...Either one party or the othr will win. The parties are one thinly disguised as two, who create half witted pseudo-issues and each controversy is cleverly crafted to be a rallying point for both parties at the same time. Give a Man something to hate and give him something to love and his soul is yours. the process is no more than a pompous coin toss. The whole idea is to maintain the Status Quo. and Sagrada Egoismo or Sacred self-intrest. Just like the Software OS Monoliths. So Damn the torpedos and choose your sides like in grade school pe. Either hate or love, but expect more of the same.

I'm getting sick of the term "lipstick on a pig" already. I've been reading it in every comment threads. Some people wants innovation, but can't even innovate in their adjectives.
All I can say is, looks like Microsoft is making a real good comeback in their products. I hope they keep it up. I have an iMac, ibook and a MacBook all with Leopard, but also have an XP desktop, Vista desktop and a Vista laptop and I never had problems with my Vista computers and works seamlessly with my network, Xbox 360 and my Treo. My only gripe is on Windows Mobile. I hope they will make it more stable and user friendly.
BTW my iMac is dead lately - I smelled something burning and it's coming from the Mac. My MacBook keeps on dropping the internet connection and can't update the software. "Oh wells." Right? Apple is all about fashion.

Crantz05 - That many problems with your Macs? Can't say I've seen those kinds of problems.

Vista, on the other hand, has tied my hands when it comes to easily working with audio and video for anything more than watching it. Thanks to the limitations put in place for Hollywood and the like, my PC is back to XP.

Ina, interesting how you neglected one of Mary Jo's inspirations to seek the build. It's surprising because Mary Jo said they got everything right:

I love my Mac and Ubuntu. Microsoft has this one last chance to fix this, many people have left already. I am not pleased with MS, but I don't hate them per say :- )

Anyways, here the reason why a big company with so many resources gets this so wrong all the time.

50% of the people that work there are drunks, yes this includes the managers.

Then take your pick, the remainder are (pot heads, coke heads, acid heads, e pillssssssss, and whatever else they can get their hands on).

There are a few people that have a clear head, but obviously not enough.

And a drug testing is not possible, because Microsoft would go out of business tomorrow, if they did that and would so many other companies.

dessy - Yup, that many problems. Someday you'll see.

I used my Mac as my main video editing and audio recording computer. Since it's broken, I used Sony Vegas 8 for video editing and Mackie's Tacktion as my DAW or audio recording in my PC's.

Too late. I have three family members that have just recently bought Macs for the first time. And I know several friends about to make that switch.

I'm not a great fan of Microsoft, but I'm not going to out and out condemn a product that won't see the light of day for another year or more. MS has made no bones about the fact that 7 is going to be based on Vista. So if you have any problems (perceptual or otherwise) with Vista, you will probably have problems with Windows 7.

Why do you guys waste your time bashing Microsoft when you know you have already lost the war? Windows 7 is coming, whether its Vista SP2 or what ever else people are saying, its still coming, and we are going to buy it, buy a new computer it will come with Windows 7.

You can say i'll downgrade to XP and all that, but really, MS doesn't care. So lets get some cups of coffee and wait for Windows 8, its on its way too!!
