Over a five-year period, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives lost dozens of weapons and hundreds of laptops that contained sensitive information, according to a scathing report issued yesterday by the Justice Department.

From 2002 to 2007, ATF lost 418 laptop computers and 76 weapons, according to the report. Two weapons were subsequently used to commit crimes. In one incident, a gun stolen from the home of a special agent was fired through the window of another home.

Ten firearms were "left in a public place." One of them was left on an airplane, three in bathrooms, one in a shopping cart and two on the top of cars as ATF employees drove away. A laptop also fell off the top of a car as an agent drove off. Another weapon "fell into the water while an agent was fishing," according to the report.

If it were one of us in the private sector first the government would be all over us and our company and then we would lose our job, since this has gone on for 5+ years without anyone being fired or jailed maybe it's time our government got off their throne and did something, like maybe fire and jail some of the agents that caused these problems and then maybe, just maybe the others would learn to take things seriously and be more diligent with the firearms and information entrusted to them about us the american public, as for the laptops containing sensative data who knows ware it is or how it is being used, the employees involved should at the very least be fired at the worst jailed for their uncaring ways.

Perfect example of the double standard of the US government today. If a citizen made any ONE o these mistakes, they would be in jail for years. The government is immune to its own tyranny. This is American fascism.

Maybe they should just stick to alcohol and tobacco, they're apparently not responsible enough for firearms. These are firearms that were probably holstered at some point so how are they getting left in a grocery cart, Bet they didn't forget any groceries. And the laptops, This isn't a new government problem. Other agencies have lost their share so why are they still getting laptops, nobody ever lost a desktop PC.

The story does not tell us what happened to the agents who lost the weapons. I guarantee they suffered punishment that would not be leved upon us. I'm talking about loss of 1 to 6 months pay, sued by any victims of the "found" gun.....get the picture? The double standard you speak of turns out to be double punishment, department charges, and criminal charges, but rest assured they will get worse then you would ever get.

Were these standard side arms? Maybe they were rifles and shotguns who knows. 76 total weapons lost or forgotten. Maybe they should do the string to the weapon trick that basic trainees have to do when they drop or leave a weapon anywhere. As others have noted it seems they are special, if this had been me I am sure I would have been in lots of trouble for just oh maybe setting my handgun in a shopping cart and walking off. Now how about the laptops and any sensitive information that may be on them. Oh how many people have been fired for that with the private sectors trying to follow federal guidelines when they handle sensitive information. Oh how I wish I were so special and above the law.

You have to understand the mindset of these people, They really do think they are above all of us.

Also why do we have 17 different federal law enforcement agencies?..Why dont they just combine them all into one...Call it U.S National Police.

The fraud, waste and abuse would make you sick.....

I still wonder why we have a government agency overseeing alcohol and tobacco. No rum-runners or clandestine cigarette makers around today. So who is there to keep out of trouble? Maybe firearms and other explosives need to be in the hands of someone else someone who can keep track of them. I mean who does the inventory? Who signs for the laptops and why do they not get into trouble?

So much stupidy going around in that agency, so much money waisted, and I take care of my handicapped son who is totaly dependent on me, and the state decides that they are paying me to much (hell I'm saving them money by keeping him home and not putting him in an instatution), this is the mentality of our government that we trust to make the big decisions. They feel that if people like my son are put away into those places that are already over crouded, they would save some money because my son surely would DIE of lack of care, as I said he need total care for every thing 24/7. Then as they die off they WOULD SAVE MONEY, a real disgrace the way they can come up with ways to waist money.

The Bush Presidency should be known as the disappearing presidency. The Iraq nuclear missiles DISAPPEARED. The CIA tapes DISAPPEARED. When the twin towers were hit Bush DISAPPEARED. When our embassy burned Bush DISAPPEARED. Since Bush took office our money has DISAPPEARED. But what would happen if Bush really disappeared? Can you imagine 'Shotgun Cheney' with his finger on the nuclear trigger? If that were to happen everyone might just DISAPPEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

First of all, it is scarey, at best, to readabout this level of incompetence, in a government agency carrying this much responsibility. There should be a full investigation, those responsible should be punished, and all results made public.Who is kidding who. There are, and have been so many government, and law enforcement infractions which called for investigation, and some form of punishment.Dream on. Try to find EXACTLY what this agency does to justify it's existance, and EXACTLY the amount of budget it works with, and how this money is spent. Then get a list of all govt. agencies and see how your tax money is spent. If you ca still get such a list, you will be amazed at some of the things being investigated, and the budgets they work with. And if an error occurs within one agency another will help them in their time of need.(i.e.) offer a job to someone who is suspended (if that even occurs.)Don't push too hard for information, though. You may be classified as a threat to national security.

Remember this is the same agencny that raided teh Branch Dividian compound for the news media 15 years ago but instead managed to get four of thier Agents killed (may they rest in peace). Then started the standoff in Waco that resulted in how many kids being killed?

Recently in Mulberry Fl. a Female K-9 Officer left Her Police Dog in a Patrol Car while on duty with no Air Conditioning, The DOG died from the HEAT! This is a Prime example of a Double Standard as She was not Fired or even charged with a Crime! Had this been you or Me Charges would have been filed and prosecuted to the fullest extent. If the Animal had been loose and a threat to me or my Family and I had shot the Dog in Defense? I would have been Charged with killing a Police Officer! I am sick of the Double Standard! If the BATF can't take responsibility and be accountable for itself! They need to get the Hell out everyone else's Life!!!

OMG, Hang them all!!!! Are you people serious? Before you morons decide to add your two cents. I would suggest going to the ATF's hompage and reading before you type and make yourself sound even dumber. Any one who actually lives and breathes knows mistakes happen. Sometimes our mind isn't where it should be its not that we don't have respect for what we are working with but basically **** happens. Show me which one of you is perfect and has never made a mistake..take your eyes off the road, run a red light because you weren't paying attention, forgot to pick your kid up leaving them unattended even for a short time. Anyone of these could very easily cost another human their life..maybe even your child. Those who risk their lives to defend ours and make our country a safer place need our support. He who is without sin should cast the first stone.

Somehow my running a red light , or not picking my kid up on time, hardly seems comparable to losing weapons, and lap tops with maybe, confidential information involved. Also, if I am caught running a red light I will be cited and fined (i.e.) punished for my crime. If I failed to pick up my kid on time, I could be investigated for child neglect/abuse and if found guilty, punished accordingly. Losing weapons and computers is not my idea of defending our lives and making our country a safer place to live.

Excuse me, if all of you people think our government and it's employees are so evil, stupid, etc, why do you all still live here? I think what many of you have failed to realize is that the ATF is huge and employs many, many people. Yes, the fact that these weapons and laptops and whatever other equipment not mentioned, are missing is unfortunate and tragic, but we are not talking about 50 people losing all these things. What has been omitted from this article is how many people are actually issued these weapons and laptops versus the seemingly "staggering" numbers of said items being reported missing over a period of 5 years in this "scathing" report. But hey, that's journalism for you. And for those of you who seems to think that these individuals suffer no consequences because of these irresponsible acts, you must pull your heads out of the sand, and in some cases, your asses, and understand that, yes, many (but surely not all, that I agree on) have indeed been fined or received other disciplinary actions. If you have no faith in our government and it's actions and believe that nothing can be done, then again I ask, why are you here?

The response to those questioning our government should hardly be "why are you here." Our government works under a system of "checks and balances."When something goes wrong, and it becomes everybodys knowledge, it becomes everybodys business.A good American does not find a place to run and go there and have fun. A true American say's it's better to fight to make things right. Over the years, we have all seen corruption in many levels of government, and law enforcement. Anyone who has blind faith in all levels of either is gullty of having their head buried in those unusual places. Even our government admits they are not perfect, and will make mistakes. They are ready for any "heat" they may recieve when something does go wrong. I like to think I am a good American. I love my country. That does not mean that I have to feel that way about the government, and all that it does. Something noteworthy happened involving a government agency. I am anxious to see if we will hear any more about it.

In the academic world, if a prof were to give a student someone else's grade it would be a violation under the Federal Education Right to Privacy Act. The college, individual administrators and the prof could be sued for invasion of privacy. We receive training videos regarding "FERPA Alerts."

No one was ever assaulted or had their property damaged by a misplaced grade, and yet the article includes nothing about any of these idiots being fired. Maybe they took off on the day they showed the video, but, umm..."Your Bush tax dollars at work!"

Yeah, I know when I was deployed to OIF, losing a weapon was grounds for serious punishment. Company Grade Article 15 at the least (loss of 15 days pay, 15 days restriction). Demotion was probable. Losing one in the states is even worse for whatever reason. Definite field grade A15, if not Court Martial and EVERYTHING stops until the lost weapon is recovered. Needless to say, we guarded our weapons with our lives. I guess the Government isn't above double standards.
