just back from the Liverpool 'gig'. wasn't exactly a triumph. pete arrived on stage about an hour later than planned, by which time, the crowd were pretty pissed off and jeering/booing.
the night was, as you might expect, supposed to be a proper gig. A d.j. played some great 7" singles on the stage, mainly from the late 70s / early 80s and the pink Eric's signs either side of the stage really helped to create some atmosphere.
when pete arrived, he looked great, but very nervous. i can honestly say that i was pretty stunned that he came out to a backing track of 'sex drive' and sang over a tape. 'lover come back' and inevitably, 'spin me', followed. and that was it. 3 songs of karaoke, essentially.
i'd actually thought pete might do something in the spirit of the evening. suffice to say, he did little to endear the crowd to him or his music. i think pete , quite rightly, has real cache with Liverpool punks / new wavers, but i wonder if that survived tonight?
ultimately, pete and his clan misjudged the evening entirely, in my view. not 20-odd quid well spent...

Well it sounds as the older Pete gets and how much he loves/admires the british invasion back in 77-84, sounds as if he getting completely bored with the whole music/spotlight scene: The older we get the more we start to lose interest in the same topics from what we liked in our youth: Look at Madonna...she is becoming a bit of a bore..now that she is 50..she really doesn't have that "spunk" anymore..people's shock in the celebrity world are becoming boring...The Presidential Debates are becoming more exciting than Hollywood.....oh well..best of luck to Pete!

porkyprimecut~
Thanks for sharing your review of that night. Too bad Pete had to take stage to a crowd of jeering/booing. I suppose any artist would be nervous in the same situation.

I am sure most DOA fans and Eric's regulars who showed up to the event were probably expecting to hear Pete perform early tracks from that era since the focus was mainly the late 70s / early 80s when most of those bands appeared at Eric's. Too bad he didn't perform "What I Want" or "Misty Circles" instead of 'sex drive,' 'lover come back' and 'spin me' as those tracks were released after the Eric's Movement. Whatever the case, I hope other future appearances are ahead, especially in the U.S..

If any other fans were able to make this event, please let us know your thoughts too. Again, porkyprimecut, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

inspite of it being a tad disappointing, it was obviously amazing to actually see pete. michael and lynne were there too - lynne looked like she was having a giddy old time, singing along to 'spin me'!

Porkyprimecut, you are a very generous person. I can only think of one word to describe last night - shambles!

Despite whatever Pete may have going on in his life at the minute, to turn up to an Eric's night and go on stage an hour late to perform 3 tired songs to a backing tape and then diss Liverpool (he introduced Spin Me as 'the song that got me out of Liverpool - thank god!'), is just wrong. As the fella behind me so right pointed out, since when was Eric's about gay disco??

I almost wept when i heard the intro to Sex Drive and a more than fragile looking Pete was wheeled out to a crowd chorus of boo's. Some homecoming. It was a very sad evening, not only because of the £50 wasted by myself and my fella getting in there, but to see a man who I adore and admire so much being so badly managed, and mistreated.

Pete is obviously not well enough for these kind of things and as disappointed as I was (yes, i was silly enough to have expected an acoustic set of pre-Spin Me tracks), I wish he would take that time off that he so obviously needs in order to get healthy again.

I must say, thank god Carlo was there on the front row, as when Pete spotted him, it was the only time his face softened and smiled.

i do agree, number 11, i was just trying to avoid getting lynched on here!
i think pete's management (does he have any?) are barking up the wrong tree completely. i was amazed when i heard 'sex drive'!
i thtink pete's slight on liverpool was unfair also - great place, and that's coming from a manc.
were you near the front? i saw carlo he was about 6ft away from me, but felt a bit of a tit saying hi, so didn't bother.

Don't be afraid to tell it like it is - you paid your money for that gig, like I did, and it was a complete and utter rip off. The gig was billed everywhere as an 'acoustic set'. There is nothing acoustic about a backing tape, and there was nothing in the songs he performed that related to the night in question, which was to celebrate Eric's.

Pete looked petrified and very very unwell. His attempts at trying to kick his leg to 'Lover Come Back' were simply heartbreaking. I thought he was gonna fall over at one point. It really was painful to watch.

I wasn't at the front, thank god, but I saw Carlo's hat right at the front and Pete saw him and smiled and said something to him.

It was the booing that shocked me the most. I can't imagine what it must feel like to come on stage and leave the stage to boo's, and I really feel for Pete, but I have to say, it was more than deserved for that hideous attempt at a gig.

Same old drag. Roses in the hair. Plait down one side. Nothing new. Obviously the theme of the night.
