Baby Manjhi’s grandmother moves SC for custody
As the battle for the custody of the surrogate infant Manjhi continues, her grandmother has moved the Supreme Court seeking that the child should not be separated from her and the biological father.
She also sought requisition of relevant travel documents for Manjhi so that she could be deported safely to Japan.
The lady was forced to move to the apex court after she learnt that the custody of the child could not be given to the father as Indian laws do not permit a single father to adopt a girl child.
Manjhi was born on July 25 after her biological parents, Ikufumi Yamada and Yuki Yamada entered into a contract with a woman in Gujarat to give birth to their child as the mother could not conceive.
However, a month before Manjhi was born, Yuki divorced her husband, Dr Ikufumi Yamada, and disowned the child.
