the end of an era?

dear 320friends,

after long deliberation, i have decided to go private. it's become increasingly clear to me that 320raider is not the vehicle i had hoped it would be when i started this all back in march. i wanted to build a community not only of people who care about high quality music, but of responsible people who would support the artists they care about. some of you clearly do, while others assuredly do not. in many respects, i've been heading towards privatization since the beginning, i've just needed the time since then to create a good rapport with responsibly sharing friends.

so, how this will work: i have collected the tags of contributors and longtime commentators, and i invite you all to apply to membership to the new 320raider. some people have ensured their admission already, through contributions or purchases, and i will hear any and all requests, pleas, and other forms of entreaty from the rest of you. unlike robin hood, i don't want money, because i think it's really shysty to get paid for doing illegal things. i DO want assurances that you're not just taking advantage of free music, that you do go out to concerts and buy cds and wear t-shirts and generally support bands you care about, whether they're a tiny brooklyn gutter band or a megahuge british superpower (or king khan and the shrines).

in one week, 320raider will be deleted for good. if you want to be a part of its future, drop me a line.

my first take-down request, and response!

the email i received:

"labels expect piracy, it's built into their management scheme."

320 -

How do you back up that fact? By all the people laid off from their jobs? By all the bands dropped because of slashed rosters?

Don't congratulate yourself and pretend you're doing anyone a service by posting full album links. Post a song or two, write about how much you like a band, and post links directly to good record stores. Be responsible.

And take down my King Khan album.

my response, which i hope you guys actually believe in as much as i do. (it's a bit long)

adam -

i did as you asked. but the point of the statement, if you look at the poll, is that no one agrees with it. and i have spent more money on albums and shows since starting this blog, and since i started reading other album blogs. a vast majority of the people who responded to the survey (132/185 people) said they buy albums when they're really good, because i think everyone who likes something a lot feels a responsibility to that artist, or that label. i'm sure i'm not the only person ever to download an entire album, realize it kicks phenomenal amounts of ass, and go out and buy it. i think it fucking sucks that people are getting laid off, and bands getting dropped, and i'll admit minor culpability in that, but smart labels, and smart bands, are aware of the fact that piracy happens, and nothing can be done about it. even putting aside the example of radiohead, who had the freedom to do in rainbows because of their status, you have artists like saul williams or girl talk who, at the lowest level, gave their most recent albums away, and asked for their listeners to pay for it if they liked it! it's a model that is working in a lot of ways - stones throw gave away liberation last year and then went on to sell it, and tons of up and coming artists blindly send their whole album to bloggers picked out of a hat. for a LOT of young bands getting press, giving away albums is a phenomenal way to get more listeners, who will buy their records, go to their show, get their t-shirts, and tell their friends. i've already bought my ticket for a king khan show, and turned an untold number of people on to his band, and your artist. i know the philosophical import of what i'm doing, but i know, just as you should, that the record-selling model perpetuated right now is a failure. maybe what i'm doing isn't right, but charging $16 for a cd is a little stiff, don't you think? if everyone followed the fugazi model, i'm sure labels, artists, and consumers would all be happier (fugazi charges $10 for an album, $5 for a show, period). i couldn't list the number of bands i've become HUGE fans of as a result of pirating their albums. i own every final fantasy release (except the young canadian mothers 7" cuz it's out of print) on cd AND vinyl, i own every caribou release except andorra [because it sucked] including multiple 12"s i had to buy overseas, i just bought amiina's seoul single on vinyl from boomkat because it wasn't released in america, madvillain, sleater-kinney, man man - i'm pretty confident why's alopecia is my favorite album of the year, which i heard when it leaked in january, which is why i've bought it on cd, as well as a t-shirt when i saw them twice in the past year. when responsible people who care about music pirate responsibly, it works, because it doesn't end with piracy; it's only the beginning of a real relationship. the people who love 320raider care about music, and naturally care about the artists they love. i think it would be better to have more people hear the supreme genius of and get invested in king khan, buy that album, find out about king khan's bbq show, and get excited about him. but i guess that's why i don't manage a record label.

since you didn't bother to check out the poll, i'm assuming you didn't notice that the link under the album is to the VICE store, and that i consistently link to label stores when they're available, and that i support the "think indie" project. i care about the artists i love, and i want to make as many people care and love them as possible.

i won't post VICE records in the future.

so, just to reiterate what i hope you already know, and already DO, and judging by your responses, you do do (haha), is that we all need to really financially support the artists we love. clearly, a lot of you do, and i know my main commenters & contributors are behind me on this, but for everyone who comes and doesn't share, and just takes and takes and takes, it's not fair, and it's not right. i started 320raider because i wanted a community of people who care about music sounding good, but who also care about bands they love. this isn't nodata, i really and truly want everyone who visits this site to find a band they adore and will support. music is important to all of us, vitally important, and though we pirate, we also need to be responsible and make it financially possible and worthwhile for the bands we love to keep making music.

the end.
