Bali Pics Round 1

Arrived in Singapore today, finally got some time to upload a few photos of Bali. I'll get the rest of them up soon, maybe when I get back to Japan. My flight back to Tokyo is not until next week, so I've got some time on my hands. I'm thinking a couple days here, then off to Malaysia.... anyway, I'll let you know how it goes. Laters!

My friend just emailed me about this Nike Japan event that took place in New York last week, was anyone able to make it there?

Bali and Road Rash

What up everyone, so far Bali has been dope dope dope. Beautiful beaches, sunshine, $5 a night hotels, $1 beers, girls in bikinis, what more can I say? The one downer on the trip so far happened two nights ago. We were cruising through town on our rented motorcycles when my friend John flipped his bike after his hat fell off, fracturing his wrist in two places. I'm sure his dad is going to be real happy when he opens his email to find the x-ray below (his dad is a doctor by the way). Fortunately for John, he said he felt like a million bucks after going in to the medical clinic and seeing all of the gruesome injuries that other tourists had sustained. Apparently one Aussie guy shredded half of his face off after a brutal crash. Take caution on the roads of southeast Asia peoples! I've got some nice photos of his road rash, and a video of him wincing in pain, look for those in the coming weeks...

Sascha Dive

I've been bumping this two hour deep house/minimal techno mix by Sascha Dive for the past 48 hours nonstop. It starts out a little slow, but the 2nd hour is phenomenal. Maybe my favorite mix of 2008 so far.

Louis Vuitton Flagship Store Japan

Louis Vuitton is set to open a new flagship store in Tokyo by the year 2010. The ten story building has been designed by UNStudio, from the drawings it looks like this place is going to be crazy. We are living in a new age for architectural design, some of the buildings constructed in recent years have really pushed the envelope. I can't wait to see what the world's city skylines are going to look like in another 50 years.

UNStudio's press release:

The elements that represent the classical values connected to the Louis Vuitton brand are implicitly present throughout the design. These elements are to a large extent identical to the modernity also implicit in the name Louis Vuitton, along with the value of inventiveness. The element that moves through all the scale levels of the design is the leaf shape. The leaf is found in the floor plan, in the section and in the elevation. It has been applied to the construction also, responding to location-specific constructional demands. Leaf-shaped openings in the façade give the building a strong identity with landmark potential, while complying with the necessity for discreetness with respect to visibility from the outside. The leaf shape can be seen as bearing a connection to the famous Louis Vuitton monogram.

The building follows the structure of a (grand) house: with three levels, each spanning a varying number of split-level floors and each with its own atmosphere and purpose. Each floor is in principle divided into four leaves, which are set in a spiral pattern with a height difference between each leaf of 2.70 meters. Terrace zones, which offer a mix of functions in a garden setting, mark the different vertical sections of the house, with the sense of intimacy growing towards the top of the building.

Nike Hyperdunk Ad Pulled

Just a few days after the release of the new Hyperdunk basketball shoe, Nike has already pulled one of its ads due to some criticism from gay rights activists.

Nike released this statement regarding the situation:

"Nike is strongly opposed to discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting athletes regardless of their sexual orientation. The advertisement in question is based purely upon a common insight from within the game of basketball - the athletic feat of dunking on the opposition, and is not intended to be offensive."

While I myself am not offended, yeah, I can pretty much see why they pulled it.

Tokyo "Panda" Dunk

The Nike "Giant Panda" Dunk Hi will release this week at Mita Sneakers in Tokyo. This release is part of the Japan City Pack, only available in Japan and in extremely limited numbers. I've seen some of the other ones like the Fukuoka Dunk with resale prices as high as $1000 when I was cruising the consignment shops in Kichijoji last month. This Panda Dunk made for Tokyo is definitely my favorite out of bunch. I'm not positive but Mita may be the only store in Japan (and the world, for that matter) selling these. You can see word "Ueno" stitched onto the tongue, the area of Tokyo where Mita Sneakers is located. The release is this Saturday, July 26th, at 10:00am. Retail price is 27,300 yen. Heads will be out there lining up early in the morning for sure. Maybe some of my peeps can come through for me while I'm still in the states.... Amr, Patrick, where you at!?
