Paint at the movies?!

There was some cheap ATM machine touch screen thing at Cinema 9, but it was blank cept for a gray line at the bottom. Touch. Taskbar. Start menu. Programs. Accessories. Paint. Holy shit.. The PWNED one was then set as background.

Why didn't you try and open the app which holds all the data info!

Cinema 9? As in Gatineau? Hmm. I live a few minutes away. I'll have to try that.

Of all the words on the internet, "pwned" is the most perfect for this application. Well played, sir.

On a scale from 1 to Win, this, ma'am, ranks win. Do people not realize they can disable stuff like that?

Long story short: Some of the Walmart shopping kiosks in their electronics department have similar 'features'.

You've made my day.

You get root access to a public ATM, with all its hardware (including dispensing of a couple tens of thousands of dollars) at your fingertips, and you use that root access to change the background image of the console?

There is hope for the world, after all.

My hat off to you, miss.

This has nothing to do with anything being insecure in Windows. It's a poorly secured kiosk application. If you take a UNIX server and leave it in a theater lobby, logged in, someone will come and screw around with that too.

This is awesome ... DUGG!

Brian, you are dumb. Unix kiosks don't give you a window manager to play around with; they can boot directly into the ATM program, and if it crashes then it will just be a blank screen.

daniel said...

hahaha still brian... it happens to be windows tho not unix i find it rather funni.

I work at a casino and our Kiosks called NRTs that break bills and gives you money from tickets received by slot machines run XP.. They are horrible little machines..

PyroManiaMan said...

If you left a UNIX machine logged in in the front of a cinema, the people who knew how to *use* UNIX wouldn't do anything. u_u

Still funny.

Actually, you can do the exact same thing with windows by changing the Shell registry key under Winlogin from explorer.exe to whatever you want. If the program closes there is no shell just wallpaper.

...i somehow doubt any root access was involved.

anyway, nicely done. :)

Ha! Too bad you could not press "Print Screen" copy + paste and left a screenshot of the ATM application running as background -so it looks like the application is running even when it is not! If that makes any sense I mean...

Well we did it all the time at this company where they had (tried to) suspend all applications except the work database...

Nice!

Haha, wow. Thanks everyone!! I was just being me and screwing around, and it amounted to this. Can't say I'm not proud of me self =P

Why back in the day one had to actually hack the box themselves before claiming p0wnage, finding a box already dropped to the desktop hardly counts now does it ;)

Some time back our local "Sainsburys" supermarket had a row of kiosks for loyalty cardholders to get promotional vouchers, etc. when they wern't showing various Windows error messages, and were actually useable, I noticed that as you navigated from one section to another, occasionally you would see the (Windows NT4) taskbar appear for a moment. It was /very/ easy to catch the start button on it, and then of course it was foreground and you could do what you wanted.. In the foyer and in full view of the security guards. So I didn't play for /too/ long! They don't have them any more :-(

many of the touch screens have an admin feature that let's you access other programs by just tapping twice in one of the screen's corners. enjoy.

Just thinking of the things you could do to an 'open' atm.... *sigh*...

Awesome catch - DUGG!

This is easily one of the best cases of kiosk pwnage on the internet. It's sad that ATMs are this insecure. As to the guys suggesting she should have looked for the database files or made it dispense cash, that's ridiculous. ATMs are connected to banks. Banks are connected to the federal government. the federal government frowns upon any misuse of ATMs. I think this was the farthest I'd ever suggest anyone going. ever. Just curious, you know there's a camera on that, right?

I haven't been to Cinema 9 in at least 3-4 years. I love that they are still using the cheap ticket machines. I guess I should get our of Aylmer more often for movie night.

Chris | Smartlaunch if you change the shell of explorer.exe it doesn't matter I run my windows without explorer.exe all the time just ctrl alt del and run task. That is how you save 30mb ram when gaming on windows. You can even run explorer.exe from there to get it back.
