Flying an airplane was one of my earliest dreams. Building and flying all the model planes I could afford, I became intimately familiar with aircraft design, and at the age of 17, I received my pilot’s license.

Heavy metal, as the wide body jets are known, is the ultimate achievement in engineering and design. While aircraft evoke many different feelings, since 9/11, no one can ever again look at a large airliner without the distant but ominous memory of how easily they were turned into weapons by a small band of terrorists. They are a symbol of how vulnerable our highly technological society has become.

In this portfolio I explore a typology of the varied cruciform shapes of jet aircraft flying precisely overhead as if frozen in space. I have decontextualized these highly detailed photographs to express the complexity and beauty of form. That these giant conglomerations of aluminum, can gracefully lift from earth is amazing. That they can return safely some hours later on another part of the globe is even more amazing. My aircraft photograph.

Vaak heb je een kunstenaar nodig die ons kan tonen hoe opmerkelijk het vertrouwde
in feite is. Jeffrey Milsteins treffende foto’s van commerciële lijnvliegtuigen werden in een mum van tijd hedendaagse iconen. Ze werden in Men’s Vogue en Condé Nast Portfolio werden besproken en deze lente door Abrams verenigd in de prachtige monografie Aircraft: the Jet as Art.

De nauwgezet uitgedachte grootformaatfoto’s van lijnvliegtuigen van Milstein, die vaak werden gemaakt terwijl deze tegen 320 km/u overvlogen, onthullen de schoonheid en de kracht van deze gestroomlijnde, complexe machines. Dit werk herstelt de glorie van het begrip luchtvaart en de technologie enigszins in ere en schuift de jet naar voren als een hedendaags kunstwerk dat alomtegenwoordig is maar, tot op heden, vaak over het hoofd werd gezien. Met zijn trillende vliegtuigen, opgehangen in een helder veld van contextloos wit, drukt Milstein zijn verwondering uit en illustreert hij de historische diepte en emotionele kracht van vliegtuigen.
Het vliegtuigproject omvat ondertussen ook bedrijfsvliegtuigen, militaire en antieke vliegtuigen, maar ook helikopters en blimps. Sinds kort aanvaardt Milstein ook opdrachten voor het fotograferen van privévliegtuigen.


Jeffrey Milstein is fotograaf, architect, grafisch ontwerper en privépiloot. De AirCraft-serie getuigt van al deze passies tegelijkertijd. Milsteins foto’s werden tentoongesteld en verzameld in heel de Verenigde Staten en Europa. In de V.S. worden ze momenteel vertegenwoordigd door Paul Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles en Bonni Benrubi Gallery in New York, in Europa door Ego Gallery in Barcelona en Young Gallery in Brussel.
Milstein werd geboren in Los Angeles, waar hij nog regelmatig terugkeert om foto’s te
maken op de internationale luchthaven, maar hij woont momenteel in Woodstock, in de staat New York.

Le projet Aircraft a évolué jusqu’à inclure des avions privés, des avions militaires et des pièces de musées de l’aéronautique, ainsi que des hélicoptères et des dirigeables. Plus récemment, Milstein réalise des commandes de propriétaires d’avions privés.

Né à Los Angeles, où il retourne fréquemment pour faire des photos à l’aéroport international, Milstein vit actuellement à Woodstock, NY.
