Anyway That You Want Me [single]7"/12"/CD, Dedicated, ZT 43784, June 1990 7" Sub-Pop October 1995Track Listing:
Personnel: |
Spiritualized was formed while Spacemen 3 was still together, even though Jason and Sonic were recording Recurring in different studios. This single was released with a "Spacemen 3" sticker on the front. Live shows were also promoted with the Spacemen 3 name which led to the final split between Jason and Sonic. All the members of Spiritualized were in Spacemen 3. Kate Radley wasn't in the band yet, but the dedication "For Kate" appears on the sleeve.

Personnel: Additional musicians: |
Recorded a long time before release, and endlessly remixed. During this time drummer Jon Mattock recorded an album with Josephine Wiggs under the name Honey Tongue. The UK CD release grouped the songs into four tracks as follows:
A limited edition of the LP (DEDLP 004S) also included a free 7" with "Anyway That You Want Me"/"Why Don't You Smile Now" (CWNN 001).
Reissue versions of LGM (with the four groups of songs) apparently have a defect at the beginning of "Angel Sigh" where the song starts, jumps back, and then starts in again later in the song. The German reissue (Dedicated ZD75330 - which has the songs apart instead of grouped together into four) doesn't have the skip.

Three different versions of this EP were released with the (*) tracks taken from the band's 1993 Glastonbury set. All three versions were released separately, with a cardboard slipcase for all three included with CD number three. A live version of the "Don't Go..." track was recorded but substituted with the studio version as Spir. did not want to use a mix with everyone talking in the crowd. The 10" single has the same track listing as the first CD.

Mixed, re-mixed, and mixed yet again. Supposedly the basic band tracks were recorded in only two weeks, but the mixing took over a year to complete. Even so, release of the album was delayed again at the last minute because of clearance problems with the lyrics to the title track. The original version of "Ladies And Gentlemen..." used a fair bit of the song "Can't Help Falling in Love", made famous by Elvis Presley and the original songwriters balked at their inclusion. Ironically, the "fools rush in" segment, which Spiritualized kept in, was actually written by Alexander Pope in his "An Essay on Criticism: Part 3" which the "Can't Help Falling In Love" songwriters originally lifted from. A last-minute remix was worked up before the official release of the album, but not before Dedicated sent out advance copies of the album.
These advance CDs with the original version of "...Floating In Space" are in a CD single case with no sleeve or details. A few copies of the 12 x 3" (with the original version) leaked out along with 50 copies of the deluxe 5" CD which were sent to label managers and the Mercury Music Prize people.
Dedicated pressed the album in a myriad of different formats. According to them, you can get the album in:
"Stay With Me" and "The Individual" originally appeared on the Let It Flow EPs and appear here in their original mix
The Japanese version tacks on the "Broken Heart" instrumental to the end of the CD as a thirteenth track.
The vinyl version of the album has a different running order than the CD. The double LP goes:
1a -- Ladies And Gentleman... / Come Together / I Think I'm In Love
1b -- All Of My Thoughts / Electricity / Home Of The brave / The Individual
2a -- Broken Heart / No God Only Religion / Stay With Me / Cool Waves
2b -- Cop Shoot Cop
Side 1b is mixed differently than the CD version (clean break between "Home Of The Brave" and "The Individual"), and there is a rumor that "The Individual" may be a completely different mix.
The Ladies And Gentlemen... title of the album comes from Jostein Gaarder's book "Sophie's World"
Couple of the lyrics from "Cop Shoot Cop" ("Hey, hey there's a hole in my arm where all the money goes, Jesus Christ died for nothing, I suppose.") come from a John Prine song entitled "Sam Stone."

Between the various horn and string sections, well over a hundred people were involved in the recording. Two different kinds of packaging are available: the standard CD jewel case with the "face" image printed on it in grey tones, and a plastic box with the "face" impressed into it in sunken relief.
The "Let It Come Down" title comes from Shakespeare's Macbeth as Banquo is killed. Perhaps more notably, "Let It Come Down" was also the title of one of Paul Bowles more famous books.
