Department of English

In this information age, with the rapid progress towards internationalization,
an understanding of English and English speaking cultures is becoming even more
necessary to facilitate communication. With this in mind, the Department of English
vigorously seeks to open its students' minds to new ways of thinking, instill in them
a sense of internationalism, and cultivate a sympathetic relation between the students
and peoplesof different cultures. To facilitate students' ability at intercultural
communication, specialized courses are divided into three fundamental areas: practical
English, British-American literature, and English linguistics. In addition to these basic
courses, smaller groups of students take graduation seminars in order to deepen their
knowledge, appreciation, and adaptation of the subject area they study.
The number of students accepted to the Department of English each year is set
at 50. Of this number, roughly half of the students enter on recommendation from their
high schools, with the remainder entering upon successful completion of the entrance
examination. These students embark on their new college life at our beautiful new
campus.

International Relationship

In 1992, the Department of English at Gifu City Women's College established
a sister school relationship with Thomas More College, located in Crestview Hills,
Kentucky, on the outer limits of Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2002, our students visited
Kapi Olani Community College at University of Hawaii in summer language proram.
Since 2004, we founded the international relationship with California State
University San Marcos, California, USA, and started the summer language program.
Each summer, a group of students from the Department of English at Gifu City Women's
College goes to San Marcos for two weeks. The program goes a long way towards
furthering international relations between our countries.
