Terdsak Jandaeng will face Eric Canoy of the Philippines in Zamboanga City for the WBO Oriental featherweight title on July 27 as part of a collaboration with Oscar De La Hoya. The bout will be televised live on Channel 7 from 9am to 1am and the winner is likely to get a slot on a big show in the USA under De La Hoya's promotional banner.
''We have a chance to beat him even that he is very strong and experienced,'' said Terdsak's manager Korkiat Panichayarom.
It could be a very tough fight for the 26-year-old Thai because unbeaten Eric Canoy has five knockouts in his seven wins alongside one draw.
It will be the first defence for Canoy, who won the vacant title with a ninth-round knockout of Tanzania's Rajabu Maoja in March.
Thirty-year-old Canoy turned pro last year after a long amateur career including winning a bronze at the 1998 Asian Games.
Somluck Khamsing defeated him in the gold contest of the 1995 SEA Games in Chiang Mai.
According to Terdsak's promoter, the Chumphon-born boxer needs more times and experience before a rematch with WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano.
Terdsak (29-3,19KOs) unsuccessfully challenged the American in the title shot in March.
''We hope to challenge him again late next year.'' said Korkiat.
''It is not necessary for Terdsak to move to other boxing institutions as he is being recognised in the US.''
The Terdsad-Canoy fight is a co-operation between Korkiat's and Sammy Gello-ani's promotion in the Philippines in an attempt to find fighters to box in the US.
''It is a project under the Golden Boy Series to look for a promising boxer to fight in the lucrative tournament in the US.'' said Korkiat of the promotion owned by Oscar De La Hoya.
Terdsak is scheduled to have a warm-up fight against a Korean in Nakhon Ratchasima on June 13.
