Can't say as i've tried this but if i was still on AOL i think i would.
http://communicator.aol.com/
The site there doesn't quite make it clear, but as well as providing a method to access your email in a more traditional email client (could access several screen names email at once as well as other pop3 boxs) It aparently allows you to connect to AOL without the need for the traditional aol Client interface.
So no forced default browser no forced aol content crap. You couls choose to use IE, Firefox, mozilla, opera any method you like to browse wioth as your default.
Makes AOl the best Dial up option available i think (in the Uk at any rate).
