I liked this tutorial, it worked well. I did find that images with a higher contrast and a variety of colours work better than more monochromatic images. I tried a variety of images, even a black and white, and colour is the way to go.

I was working with an image whose background and foreground had no contrast. I tried danny's tutorial and I didn't get good results. I though about distinguishing the background from the foreground. I just applied a layer mask, masked up the foreground, then darkened the unmasked background. This worked great. My final result was exceptional. So for those of you with that problem I had, here is one great solution...

I just found out, if you increase the lightness a little when you increase saturation, it gives it a different look, more like pastel and more of a real skin tone

I'm not big on commenting on websites, and this tutorial isn't denny's best work, but I chose this one to comment on because of some of the negative comments I've seen. I've seen a lot of positive comments on your work, and some negative ones. To those who insist on posting mean comments: regardless of whether or not a paricular effect works on an image you work on these tutorials really help to understand the power of PS and how every little changable option can affect a photo. Non-constructive negativity serves no purpose, so maybe some of you should engage your brain before mindlessly typing out comments made to bash his work.

Denny, thank you for these tutorials, I find this to be one of the better tutorial sites on PS and your knowledge on the inner workings of Adobe is really admirable.

this will only work well with a simple background in contrast to the focus of the picture.

Jj:

What does your image turn out to look like? The posterized effect will be different if you're using a different image. Try using the same photo used for this tutorial and see if you can achieve the same results.

...
written by Jj, October 25, 2006

hey it gets confusin after step 2 with the posterization effect... my picture never turns out the same as your step 2

marilia:

I'm sorry to read that you're having troubles with this tutorial. Please let me know which step you started seeing problems when following the tutorial.

I had a look at the tutorial again and found another mistake. I have made a change to page 1: step 1 where it says to merge the layers but doesn't mention creating a new layer before doing that. I replaced it with another step that's easier: press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E to stamp visible and delete the middle layer. I apologize for the numerous mistakes with the Pop Art tutorial and I can a*sure you that there are no other instructional mistakes.

With that mistake known, I tried it out following the exact steps of the tutorial (without comparing my work with the tutorials screen shots) and I wasn't able to come up with the problem you described. I would be happy to help you with your problem. Please let me know which step you started seeing problems.

loki:

Don't let the number of pages in this tutorial fool you, it's actually a really quick and easy Photoshop effect.

While there are many different ways of achieving similar effects, they're not all the same. Experiment with different methods to find the most desirable effect. For example, you can use the cutout filter instead if you're looking for a more simple and less saturated pop art effect.

There are a milion ways to get the same result as the the one you did with just 2 clicks of the mouse and somehow u made a big and somewhat useless tut! good job! Get a clue pls!

Frank & woot:

Sorry about the mistake!

I missed a step in page 2, step 2. After duplicating the layer, change the blending mode of the new layer to Multiply.

Thanks for letting me know about the problem.
